Summary
- Doom: The Dark Ages won’t end the reboot trilogy, assures director Hugo Martin.
- Xbox fans highly anticipate the game, impressed by what’s been shown of its combat and new features.
- Martin hints at more Doom games in the future, saying he has no problem with working on the series for a long time.
According to the game director Hugo Martin, there’s no need for Doom enthusiasts to fret about “Doom: The Dark Ages” concluding the reboot trilogy. This upcoming game, a prequel to the 2016 Doom reboot and Doom Eternal, was initially unveiled during Xbox’s highly anticipated Summer Game Fest Showcase in June. Among all the announcements made at the show, “Doom: The Dark Ages” was a top pick for many Xbox fans, and it ranks high among Xbox’s most anticipated games of 2025.
In the past week, “Doom: The Dark Ages” garnered significant attention during Xbox’s Developer Direct event. During this event, enthusiasts were offered an in-depth exploration of numerous aspects within the game. The combat element was particularly emphasized, providing fans with a sneak peek at the Doom Slayer’s impressive new medieval melee weapons such as a flail, a mace, and even a throwable shield adorned with saw teeth, which can also be utilized for parrying enemy assaults. The updated glory kills of “Doom: The Dark Ages” were also showcased, along with several of the game’s extraordinary firearms.
Before diving deep into the details of Doom: The Dark Ages during the Xbox Developer Direct event, game director Hugo Martin shared some thoughts about the future of Doom at id Software. He clarified that Doom: The Dark Ages is not the final installment in the reboot series and expressed his enthusiasm for potentially continuing this project for an extended period.
Doom: The Dark Ages Won’t Conclude The Doom Reboot Series
Given the massive popularity and commercial success of Doom since its 2016 re-launch, it’s not hard to understand why Martin is keen on developing more Doom games. In fact, concluding Doom: The Dark Ages, a prequel, would be rather illogical for the series. Although Doom Eternal’s The Ancient Gods DLCs appear to have neatly concluded the reboot storyline, there could still be opportunities between these reboot installments to create new games.
The game ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’ is not intended as a concluding chapter…I could happily continue working on it for quite some time.
Although Martin’s remarks may excite Doom fans, it’s likely that devotees of id Software’s other FPS series, Quake and Rage, feel let down. While Quake enjoyed the same level of popularity as the 90s Doom games, fans have been eagerly awaiting a reboot in the vein of 2016’s Doom for quite some time now. The case of Rage is somewhat different, given that Rage 2 didn’t fare well critically or commercially. Consequently, there seems to be little optimism left for Rage, regardless of whether id Software continues to focus on the Doom series in the future.
Hugo Martin’s remarks are indeed captivating, yet it’s safe to say that we’re looking at several years before id Software unveils the future of Doom. In the meantime, preparations for “Doom: The Dark Ages” are in full swing, set to debut on May 15. This title will be available on Xbox Series X and S, PC, and PlayStation 5, with an immediate release on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
