- Constant script changes may indicate an effort to perfect the movie.
A new Star Wars movie, which is coming soon, has just gained some assurance at Lucasfilm with the addition of a new screenwriter. This encouraging news, though, suggests that fans might have to be patient for a bit longer before they can finally watch the highly anticipated film.
Back in the vibrant spring of 2023, I was thrilled to hear the news at the Star Wars Celebration about a fresh Star Wars movie featuring Daisy Ridley as Rey. Since then, the project has seen its fair share of twists and turns. At one point, Damon Lindelof, known for his work on shows like Lost and The Leftovers, was teaming up with Justin Britt-Gibson to script this Star Wars movie (tentatively named New Jedi Order). However, both of them parted ways and were subsequently replaced by the brilliant mind behind Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight.
But even that promising collaboration didn’t last long. In the chilly month of October 2024, I was disappointed to learn that Knight had also decided to step away from the project. The rollercoaster ride for this new Star Wars movie continues!
Currently, it’s being announced by The Hollywood Reporter that George Nolfi, known for writing Ocean’s Twelve and The Bourne Ultimatum, is set to pen the script for the New Jedi Order movie. This news indicates that Lucasfilm continues to have confidence in this project, although delays in the script may have postponed any anticipated production starts. Originally, Lucasfilm had hoped the New Jedi Order movie would follow The Mandalorian and Grogu’s filming as the next Star Wars film to enter production. However, it is now Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars movie that will be the next feature film in the franchise to start shooting, with Ryan Gosling in discussions to take on a leading role. Despite various changes in writers, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached as director for the New Jedi Order movie.

Although some spectators might interpret recurring script delays as reason enough to scrap the Rey Skywalker film, it appears that Lucasfilm remains optimistic about this production. Bringing in fresh writing talent doesn’t automatically mean the movie will fail. In fact, Marvel Studios has faced criticism for pushing projects forward even when the script is unfinished, seemingly planning to iron out any issues during filming or post-production. This approach may have served them well in the past, but it has recently led to a series of underperforming films in the MCU. Consequently, fans might find comfort in knowing that Lucasfilm is taking the necessary time to perfect the script.
It’s often the case that big Hollywood films have several screenwriters, however, the number of abandoned Star Wars projects by Lucasfilm in recent times has left fans speculating if the New Jedi Order movie could be next. Disney allegedly advised Lucasfilm to postpone announcing Star Wars projects to prevent fan disappointment if these projects don’t progress as planned. Fans might not interpret the frequent changes in writers as a problem for the New Jedi Order film if it hadn’t been announced so early. Disney enjoys generating excitement at conventions with big project announcements, but maybe they should avoid doing so to sidestep negative attention when these films or series take longer than anticipated.
Star Wars: New Jedi Order is in development at Lucasfilm.
