As an ardent admirer of Bethesda and their captivating creations, I eagerly anticipated Starfield, envisioning it as a breathtaking space odyssey tailored just for us fans. Upon its 2023 release, the game has sparked lively discussions among fellow enthusiasts. While exploring this new universe can be thrilling and fulfilling, there’s no denying that Starfield stumbles slightly in the character department. Despite Bethesda’s reputation for crafting rich, compelling characters that breathe life into their virtual worlds, a recurring critique of Starfield lies in its shallower character development compared to previous titles.
In the realm of Starfield’s character companions, there seems to be less depth and complexity in terms of morality compared to previous games such as Skyrim and Fallout 4. Although there are minor differences in their morals, it poses a challenge to create an engaging evil playthrough due to the limited options provided. Consequently, Starfield appears more restrained than its predecessors, leaving some veteran Bethesda enthusiasts yearning for a richer tapestry of moral ambiguity and truly immoral characters. There’s speculation about what future DLC for Starfield might bring, but introducing more diverse moralities among companions would certainly enhance the experience.
Starfield’s Lack of Morally Questionable Companions Needs Addressed
Looking to Skyrim and Fallout 4 For Inspiration
In the games Skyrim and Fallout 4, there have been some intriguing companions with complex moral codes that are not quite black-and-white. From the obviously insane to those who seem indifferent, these traits do not appear to be present in the world of Starfield, at least as far as companions go. Characters like Cicero and Serana from Skyrim showcase varying shades of morally ambiguous NPCs. Cicero, a mad jester, may resort to attacking or killing anyone who challenges the power of the Night Mother. As for Serana, her moral dilemma is deeply rooted in her history. Despite being a vampire, which automatically places her among characters not entirely averse to doing wrong, she still possesses admirable qualities.
In the game “Fallout 4”, two of the most morally ambiguous characters you’ll encounter are Cait, a former cage fighter, and Strong, a Super Mutant from the Commonwealth. Cait’s distorted sense of morality stems largely from her painful past. On the other hand, Strong’s goal to strengthen his species by exposing them to humanity’s collaborative skills, often through forceful means, creates an amusing paradox. The moral compasses of these two characters become clearer as you discover the actions and decisions they disagree with.
- Some of Cait’s dislikes include avoiding confrontation, helping settlers, and supporting freedom of the press when talking to Piper in the Jewel of the Commonwealth quest.
- Some of Strong’s dislikes include healing Dogmeat, giving a new home to the Vault-Tec rep, and returning the Deathclaw egg to its nest in The Devil’s Due quest.
In simpler terms, both “Skyrim” and “Fallout 4” feature a variety of characters that demonstrate the depth of these games, however, choosing only four characters is sufficient to highlight areas where “Starfield” may need improvement. In the latest “Shattered Space” DLC, two new characters were added, but they fell short in comparison to the captivating histories and driving forces that Bethesda’s earlier games were known for.
Shattered Space introduced the base game’s mysterious House Va’ruun.
Starfield’s Next DLC Has to Impress
So far, the details about the DLC for “Starfield” remain under wraps, but after the release of “Shattered Space,” it’s clear that Bethesda needs a compelling offering to live up to expectations. While “Starfield” has great promise, the absence of character development and flexibility found in previous Bethesda games can leave gaps in the space adventure experience at times.
Starfield‘s next DLC is theorized to be called “Starborn.”
When the upcoming expansion for “Starfield” is revealed, it will be intriguing to discover if Bethesda takes steps to enhance the diversity in companion characters or not. For now, players who desire an antagonistic role-playing experience in “Starfield” might find their future a bit challenging.
