Summary
- Daredevil: Born Again seemingly aims for less dialogue, upsetting fans of the previous Netflix series.
- The show underwent a creative overhaul, with new episodes and scenes rewritten.
- Showrunner Scardapane promises more big action sequences and a New York crime story vibe.
In a recent conversation, showrunner Dario Scardapane shared insights on how the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again” will set itself apart from its predecessor on Netflix. Unfortunately, some fans are expressing concern that this new version may overlook what originally made the Netflix series exceptional.
Initially, the production of “Daredevil: Born Again” seemed to have tenuous ties to the original Netflix series, which ended after three seasons. Marvel Studios appeared unwilling to replicate the content seen in the Netflix series and opted for a different approach instead. However, due to actors’ and writers’ strikes in 2023, Kevin Feige and the executives at Marvel Studios had an opportunity to review the “Daredevil: Born Again” footage. They concluded that it wasn’t fitting with their vision. As a result, the creative team decided to revamp the series by writing new episodes, modifying scenes, and using some pre-existing footage, with Scardapane being appointed as showrunner.
In an interview with SFX Magazine, as reported by GamesRadar, Scardapane highlighted the differences between Daredevil: Born Again and the Netflix series, emphasizing that there will be more light-hearted scenes among the characters and fewer introspective moments. Scardapane further clarified that he felt a weakness of the Netflix Daredevil show lay in its tendency to delve deeply into philosophical discussions about heroism. “The original show, at its best, was exceptional,” Scardapane stated. “At its worst, it was characters debating their roles as heroes in a room. I felt that had been explored. I’m not criticizing; I just didn’t want the characters to constantly discuss their personal struggles.
In his role as showrunner for Netflix’s The Punisher, Scardapane emphasized that they aimed to write extended dialogue scenes between characters, which provided room for action sequences. Now, they have the flexibility to execute high-octane action scenes much quicker. Scardapane also mentioned that while The Punisher had a noir-inspired feel, Daredevil: Born Again leans more towards a New York-based crime narrative, similar to two well-known projects.
This production carries an atmosphere reminiscent of ’90s crime dramas like The Sopranos and King of New York. It delivers a gritty, authentic feel that certain Netflix series couldn’t quite capture. Visually, it’s quite somber, not just in terms of story but also the cinematography itself. However, it’s even darker than those shows.
It seems that Scardapane’s view on Netflix’s Daredevil series, particularly regarding the dialogue scenes, isn’t shared by many fans. On Twitter, several fans have criticized Scardapane’s description of these scenes as the show at its “worst.” Instead, they appreciate episodes like “New York’s Finest,” which focuses on Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, as some of the series’ best. This has led a few fans to worry that the creators of Daredevil: Born Again may not fully understand what made the original Netflix series appealing, opting instead to prioritize action over character development moments that fans cherished.
Although the intense fight sequences and encounters with villains in the Netflix show were certainly thrilling, some of its most impactful moments came from simple conversations between characters in various rooms. If the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again sacrifices these poignant character interactions for more action scenes, viewers might find themselves disappointed.
Daredevil: Born Again premieres on March 4, 2025, on Disney Plus.
