As a dedicated gamer immersed in the Halo universe, one aspect that’s always grabbed my attention is the armor customization. It’s not just about enhancing my character’s defense; it’s about expressing myself and contributing to the game’s rich lore. Ever since Halo 3 unveiled alternate armor sets for both Spartans and Elites, the evolution of armor design in the Halo universe has been nothing short of remarkable, unfolding more intricately with each new installment.

Many armor designs in Halo have been either original creations or inspired by characters and groups from both within and outside the Halo universe, like Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, Security from Marathon, and ODST armor. However, it’s worth noting that some new armor sets have also been influenced by the looks of Covenant species. With Halo Infinite introducing Spartan armor based on Brutes, Grunts, Jackals, and Prophets, there are still two more Covenant species left to draw inspiration for armor: Drones and Hunters.

Halo’s Covenant Armor Sets Explained

343 Industries initiated the creation of armor inspired by alien species within the Halo universe, starting with the Spartan Prefect armor in Halo 4’s DLC, which resembles the Forerunner Prefects from the shield world Trevelyan. Moving forward in modern alien aesthetics, the first instance was seen in Halo 5: Guardians with the Spartan Helioskrill armor, designed by Elites and modeled after the original Arbiter armor. In accordance with Halo lore, the Helioskrill armor, along with several other Spartan armors, were developed in partnership between the Arbiter’s Swords of Sanghelios and the UNSC as part of the Anvil Initiative.

In this interaction, it wasn’t just about one side dominating, as the game “Halo: The Master Chief Collection” offered the Elite characters an armor design created by humans (called Accord armor).

In Halo Infinite, a diverse array of Spartan armor, influenced and at times designed by the Covenant species, has multiplied in number and style. Though armor generated from the Anvil Initiative keeps being added, new sets of armor have also been crafted by the Banished and independent colony world Venezia for renegade Spartans and newly formed Janissary elite soldiers.

As a devoted enthusiast, I’ve noticed that many self-made Spartan IVs have unearthed and reinstated some extraordinary armor sets in the heat of battle, like the Elite-crafted Assailer armor. The armor sets inspired by Brutes, Grunts, Jackals, and Prophets, which we’ve seen in Halo Infinite so far, have truly caught my eye:

1. Brute Armor – This set is a formidable nod to the Brutes’ intimidating presence.
2. Grunt Armor – Inspired by the cunning Grunts, this armor adds a touch of stealth and agility to the battlefield.
3. Jackal Armor – The swift and elusive Jackals have left their mark on this sleek, speedy armor set.
4. Prophet Armor – Emulating the enigmatic Prophets, this armor exudes an aura of mystery and power.

Drones and Hunters in Post-War Halo

In the Halo series, players can wear armor modeled after Brutes, Grunts, Jackals, and Prophets, but two significant Covenant species have yet to receive Spartan armor based on them: the insectoid Drones and the colossal Hunters. Since Halo: Reach, Drones, also known as the Yanme’e, have been underrepresented in Halo Studios games. They were absent from Halo 4, Halo 5, Halo Wars 2, and Halo Infinite. Even Cortana, in her domination speech at the end of Halo 5, did not acknowledge them. Drones have made appearances in some additional content, such as the comic Halo: Rise of Atriox, but their role in the post-war galaxy remains largely unknown.

In many games and additional content following the war, characters known as Hunters or Lekgolo have consistently played significant roles. During the major conflict called the Great Schism, Hunters generally aligned themselves with the Elites. Consequently, you’ll often find Hunters working together with Elites and humans in the Swords of Sanghelios. However, numerous other Hunter groups decided to support Covenant remnants like Jul ‘Mdama’s Covenant and the Banished. Within the Banished faction, Hunters were given greater independence and power than ever before, with new Lekgolo worms emerging—the Goliaths. In some cases, even Hunters held leadership positions, such as Colony in Halo Wars 2 and Myriad in Halo Infinite.

Potential Drone and Hunter-inspired Spartan Armor Sets

Working in tandem with Janissaries from Venezia, the Banished might collaborate on creating a unique armor set conceptualized by Colony. This imagined Spartan armor, known as the Hunter Spartan, could display characteristics reminiscent of Hunters’ trademark shields, spikes on the back, and Scarab-like armor. It might also incorporate fuel cells on the wrists, mimicking the Hunters’ heavy assault cannons. Alternatively, Venezia or even Anvil Station could manufacture Spartan armor inspired by the exoskeletons and antigravity systems of Drones.

This armor might be crafted by either group, capable of penetrating the Drones’ homeworld Palamok using a signal that imitates Yanme’e Queen’s pheromones as an example. These armors could also provide more insight into the condition of these species in the aftermath of the war within the Halo universe, enabling players to wear armor from every significant Covenant species.
