In the vast majority of video games, Non-Player Characters (NPCs) significantly contribute to the overall experience. They help establish the storyline and offer interactive elements within the game, making their significance indisputable.
Indeed, certain individuals perform their duties exceptionally well, earning such respect from players that they become unforgettable figures, stirring even greater enthusiasm for their respective domains.
I greatly value the skill of designing non-player characters, and I, like many others, often wish for a personal journey where we can delve further into their tales by experiencing them firsthand.
As a dedicated gamer, let me share with you ten unforgettable non-player characters who’ve left an indelible mark on our gaming journey. These NPCs are so captivating and well-crafted, I believe they truly deserve to star in their very own spinoffs!
10. Meta Knight
Solitary and Underrated
Franchise(s) | Kirby, Super Smash Bros. |
Most prominent appearance | Super Smash Bros. Ultimate |
Speaking of nostalgia, one of my cherished childhood video games was none other than “Kirby’s Adventure”. This game had a character that, despite being less talked about, left an indelible mark on me – the enigmatic Meta Knight.
Regardless of the mystery that swirls around him and his frequent appearances across various series installments, he’s never managed to stand out independently.
Despite frequently appearing in the popular game, Super Smash Bros., he hasn’t received the recognition he truly merits. In fact, it seems he is ready to lead in a game of his own, an action-platform style.
In the realm of gaming history, Meta Knight stands out as a timeless icon who’s been by our side for decades. It’s only fair to shine some light on him now.
9. Victor Sullivan
Back to Prime Sully
Franchise(s) | Uncharted |
Most prominent appearance | Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End |
Although I’m not particularly a fan of the Uncharted series, Victor Sullivan’s presence always manages to make things more engaging for me.
Following his role in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, “Sully” has truly captivated me. He possesses an undeniable charm, yet there’s much about his narrative that remains untold to us.
As a dedicated gamer, if Naughty Dog decides to continue the series, I’d love to see a spin-off focusing on Sullivan’s past exploits. Given his rich backstory, he seems like a character ripe for his own video game adventure.
It might not be crucial for the storyline, but it offers a fan-friendly chance, essentially a low-risk move, that could please the franchise’s audience.
8. Tommy Miller
In Need of Closure
Franchise(s) | The Last of Us |
Most prominent appearance | The Last of Us Part 2 |
Concerning Naughty Dog and excessively repeated stories, I’d be thrilled if they developed a game focused around the character of Joel’s brother, Tommy Miller.
Instead of opting for a third sequel, I think a spin-off might be more fitting to further develop the narrative in an engaging way.
In summary, I believe that The Last of Us Part 2 concluded in an appropriate manner, but exploring the events from Tommy’s perspective and feelings could significantly enrich the game’s narrative.
Using a self-contained game format similar to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy could effectively bring this concept to life, fortunately, dreaming doesn’t cost a thing.
7. Atreus
The Heir to the Legacy
Franchise(s) | God of War |
Most prominent appearance | God of War: Ragnarök |
In order to maintain an unblemished moral compass, I express a desire for Santa Monica Studio to venture into different intellectual properties. However, given my assumption that this may not occur immediately, I eagerly wish that they allow Kratos to retire and concentrate on Atreus instead.
In God of War: Ragnarök, the stage is perfectly poised for the Spartan’s offspring to continue the saga, and Atreus possesses sufficient depth as a character to warrant a fresh narrative. (Alternatively, Atreus demonstrates enough complexity in his character to merit a standalone storyline.)
Based on his significant contribution to the most recent edition, it’s likely that the creator has already devised a role for him, taking into account that he even possesses unique gameplay mechanics.
If given the choice, I’d actually lean towards a genre shift that more accurately reflects the generational gap between Atreus and Kratos. However, as long as Loki gets his own unique storyline, I’m content.
6. Gray Fox
Following Raiden’s Lead
Franchise(s) | Metal Gear, Super Smash Bros. |
Most prominent appearance | Metal Gear Solid |
Frankly speaking, there are numerous captivating characters within the realm of Metal Gear Solid, making it quite challenging to single out one for a spinoff.
Instead, among all the potential characters, I chose Gray Fox as he is a remarkably complex character with an intricate design that offers limitless gameplay opportunities.
As a die-hard fan, I’d like to point out that Frank Jaeger is not merely a sidekick; he’s so much more than that. From crafting immersive stealth experiences to embracing the action-packed hack-and-slash style akin to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, his portfolio speaks volumes about his versatility.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t forget the lasting impact of the character who graced our screens multiple times across the franchise, but it’s his iconic roles in Metal Gear Solid and, let’s say, an “appearance” in its sequel that truly resonates with fans. A spin-off dedicated to this legend could be a fantastic tribute to his enduring legacy.
5. Vaas Montenegro
An Iconic Villain
Franchise(s) | Far Cry |
Most prominent appearance | Far Cry 3 |
Although it seems unlikely that we’ll ever get a Vaas Montenegro spin-off, his character in Far Cry 3 has left an indelible impression on me. I can hardly forget him, the unforgettable antagonist he was.
He’s often seen as one of the greatest villains across gaming history, yet I believe there was ample opportunity for his character to be utilized even further.
Few performances stand out as vividly as that of Michael Mando in his portrayal of Vaas, a role that significantly contributed to the game becoming a classic.
Following my appearance in Far Cry 6’s DLC, it seems unlikely that a standalone spinoff will materialize, yet I continue to nurture hopes for a fully-fledged sequel focusing on this intricately crafted character.
4. Solaire of Astora
Let’s Look for the Sun
Franchise(s) | Dark Souls |
Most prominent appearance | Dark Souls |
Dark Souls stands among the greatest game trilogies ever created, featuring a host of unforgettable characters who certainly deserve recognition.
Among various options such as Siegmeyer of Catarina, Lucatiel of Mirrah, and even Patches, I ultimately chose Solaire of Astora, who remains the dearest and most cherished symbol.
Given his captivating personality, significance, and visibility, he might effortlessly take on a role in one of FromSoftware’s lesser-known productions.
Given that Hidetaka Miyazaki tends to collaborate rather than work alone, it’s plausible that he might delegate this task to a team member within his studio who is eager to explore new ideas in a secure environment. This way, both the creator and the experimenter benefit from the experience.
3. Sadie Adler
The Only One
Franchise(s) | Red Dead Redemption |
Most prominent appearance | Red Dead Redemption 2 |
It’s hard to find a Red Dead Redemption 2 player who hasn’t pondered over the idea of a standalone game centered around the character of Sadie Adler, and I am no exception.
Through her progression, she becomes one of the most distinguished Non-Player Characters within the whole storyline, shining brightly amidst the remarkable ensemble of characters that populate the game.
Given that her storyline concludes ambiguously and fans of the series long for more, a spinoff focused on her would be an unparalleled dream.
I don’t view it as a potential sequel to “Red Dead Redemption 3“, considering the need for plot consistency, but rather as a standalone narrative that allows us to follow her journey of discovering purpose in life after enduring so much suffering.
2. Johnny Silverhand
Samurai Once Again
Franchise(s) | Cyberpunk 2077 |
Most prominent appearance | Cyberpunk 2077 |
Although Keanu Reeves’ exceptional acting contributes significantly to his reputation, the character of Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 seems ideally suited for a standalone story.
Experiencing the full story of Samurai rising against Arasaka, his great foe, would be an epic journey if we could delve deeper into it than just brief glimpses or flashbacks from the game.
In the intricately layered realm of Cyberpunk, there are countless numbers of storylines to delve into, spanning across different timelines – the past, present, and future.
Given the popularity of Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077, it’s almost inevitable that a spinoff featuring him would be highly sought after by dedicated fans. In fact, they would likely consider purchasing it on its release date without a second thought.
1. Kim Kitsuragi
The Depth of Humanity
Franchise(s) | Disco Elysium |
Most prominent appearance | Disco Elysium |
Among the characters that come before him, it might be an unusual preference, but there’s no other character I’d prefer to see as the lead more than Kim Kitsuragi from Disco Elysium.
In terms of character complexity, growth, and potential storylines, the world crafted by ZA/UM provides an ideal setting for a standalone adventure that remains connected to the original in a meaningful way.
In a fresh installment of the series, the blend of Revachol’s rich history and Kitsuragi’s intriguing but enigmatic past could redefine storytelling in video games yet again, marking another groundbreaking chapter for narrative-focused titles.
Regardless of the context – his history, his post-Disco Elysium journey, an alternate scenario where he doesn’t transform his life, or even a frozen moment capturing just a smile – a game featuring Kitsuragi is always intriguing and timeless.
Despite the constraints on mechanical feasibility, the vastness of our world more than compensates for it. However, since the developer is no longer with us, this list serves as an expression of grand ambitions and dreams.
