At the current moment, the Mass Effect series seems to be in a state of uncertainty. Although BioWare has acknowledged that they are developing Mass Effect 4, neither the release date nor the game’s final appearance have been revealed yet. Despite this absence of clear information about the franchise’s future, Mass Effect 4 is a crucial project for BioWare, as its success or failure will significantly influence the studio’s path following the relatively disappointing sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Beyond its significant impact on BioWare’s collection of games, Project Mass Effect 4 carries immense weight for the passionate Mass Effect fanbase. Since Mass Effect 3, the series has missed the distinctive charm that elevated it to one of the leading science-fiction gaming brands. Regrettably, Mass Effect: Andromeda didn’t meet the high expectations set by the Intellectual Property (IP). In a sense, Mass Effect 4 has been assigned the responsibility of restoring the franchise and updating it for contemporary times, a challenge that’s not easy to overcome. However, adopting a strategy similar to Halo’s, the Mass Effect IP might evolve and expand in intriguing, varied directions, surpassing the boundaries of a single, comprehensive launch.
Mass Effect Could Benefit From Halo-Esque Spin-Off Games
Mass Effect’s Universe Has Room for Non-Mainline Entries
The title of Mass Effect 4, along with Liara’s appearance in its unveiling video, hints that it will carry on the narrative from the original trilogy, a continuation not shared by Mass Effect Andromeda. Although Andromeda could be classified as a spin-off due to its disconnection from the plot of the initial games, it is so distant from the original story (it’s set in another galaxy) that it sometimes feels like an entirely different series, at least on occasion.
Reach could focus on the Prothean’s initial encounter with the Reapers or the Krogan’s war against the Turians. These games would enrich the Mass Effect universe while providing players with varied experiences. Furthermore, if effectively promoted, they could be welcomed with more moderate expectations, much like how the Resident Evil fanbase views the smaller Revelations games.
In a hypothetical scenario, Electronic Arts (EA) might delegate the creation of these supplementary games to different development studios. This would allow BioWare to focus their efforts on the main series titles instead.
Mass Effect Spin-Offs Could Be More Experimental
The Halo Wars series has managed to stand the test of time despite its unique gameplay that sets it apart from the main Halo franchise. This strategy game draws on the narrative elements of the broader Halo universe to support its structure and core mechanics, making it reminiscent of Mass Effect in terms of advanced technology and large-scale warfare. These aspects could be utilized for engaging strategic scenarios within Mass Effect. Similarly, Mass Effect could explore other genres such as visual novel or city-building, or even reintroduce the top-down shooter mechanics from the mobile game, Mass Effect Galaxy.
Instead of sticking with traditional methods, these drastic changes aim to offer players a fresh and captivating way to explore the world of Mass Effect. It’s not just about third-person tactical shooting; there are other innovative mechanisms to delve into the game’s intricate lore. In essence, this method would provide fans with a variety of immersive, distinctive Mass Effect experiences, thereby easing the burden on main entries to be the sole drivers of the franchise’s progression.
