In some open-world video games, cities serve as an exciting component. Yet, at times, gamers yearn for a break from cityscapes and crave exploring natural environments instead. Fortunately, vast open worlds cater to this desire, enabling players to roam through wilderness areas and adapt to various environmental situations.
A significant number of these video games revolve around survival themes, placing players into harsh, uncivilized settings far removed from the conveniences of human communities. Within these environments, some games feature rudimentary human settlements struggling to survive, while others depict remnants of human civilization scattered across vast landscapes.
5. Far Cry New Dawn
Small Settlements And A Lot Of Angry Wildlife
Prior to the nuclear attack in Far Cry 5, Hope County, Montana was modestly populated. However, seventeen years after the incident, there are even fewer indications of human civilization left. The once bustling small towns now stand mostly deserted, with only a few exceptions like the Highwayman outposts, Eden’s Gate, and the survivor compounds. In other words, there are no significant urban areas remaining in Hope County.
In simpler terms, Far Cry New Dawn isn’t as well-liked as other spin-offs within the series. The antagonists, known as the Twins, weren’t generally well-received and some found the game to be more like an extended DLC than a full title. However, it does have its merits. The weapon crafting is top-notch, and the saw launcher makes for a fantastic starting weapon. Moreover, the post-apocalyptic punk style of the Highwaymen is captivating, and there are several helpful (and cute) survivors among the cast to team up with.
4. Days Gone
Stay Moving, Stay Mobile
In the rugged, post-apocalyptic landscapes of Oregon, I roam as a once-wild biker on a quest to find my lost love. With a knack for tracking mutants, I’ve become an unlikely hunter for hire, traversing this grand, open-world terrain on the faithful engine of my motorbike. The raw, untamed beauty that surrounds me is the very essence of Oregon, with its scattered settlements and remnants of a forgotten civilization dotting the land. Cities are but distant memories here, replaced by the intriguing remains of our past and the breathtaking environmental vistas that stretch out before me. The world I navigate is a diverse tapestry, rich in detail and ripe for exploration.
In the wake of a pandemic, humans have transformed into zombie-like creatures known as “Freakers.” These mutants roam around and attack en masse. Deacon’s mission involves luring these Freakers into designated areas or burning their nests during daylight hours. Eliminating Freakers without getting attacked requires a strategic approach, usually involving cautious exploration to identify the most effective method for each situation.
3. Sons Of The Forest
Open-World Sci-Fi Horror
Similar to its predecessor titled “The Forest”, the game named “Sons of the Forest” is a first-person survival adventure where your character finds themselves stranded on an unfamiliar island following a plane crash. The twist here is that instead of searching for a lost child, you’re in pursuit of a missing millionaire. Unlike the protagonist from the earlier game, the player character this time around appears to be well-prepared for survival and is accompanied by Kelvin, who seems to have suffered severe brain trauma during the crash.
In this vast, open island setting, you’ll encounter aggressive creatures, including a band of grotesque cannibals that evolve into different forms as time passes. Scattered across the map are caves and fortified structures, some more hazardous than others. By collecting items and crafting objects, players can gradually unravel the mysterious, sci-fi narrative of the island, unlocking new areas one by one.
2. The Long Dark
Survival At All Costs
The Long Dark
In simple terms, this is an engaging survival game set in a first-person perspective, plunging players into the icy wilderness of Canada. The scenario revolves around the main character’s plane crash in a geomagnetic storm, leaving them stranded with only a backpack full of essential items and whatever they can scavenge from their surroundings. The game offers story, survival, and challenge modes that will keep you on your toes as you navigate this harsh environment.
Additionally, the game presents itself as a mystery, encouraging careful exploration. In the story mode, players are not only searching for their lost wife but also uncovering the secrets of Great Bear Island, which holds its own enigmas.
In The Long Dark, there’s a wealth of information about weather conditions and the well-being of the player character. Overcoming environmental obstacles plays a crucial role in the game. If you don’t succumb to the cold, a wolf lurks nearby ready to complete your demise. Each region presents distinct perils, and taking care of your character requires specific skills and knowledge of the area.
1. Green Hell
Complex Ecologies And Brutal Combat
The game titled “Green Hell” offers an immersive first-person survival experience set within the dense Amazon rainforest, unexplored and challenging. This title stands out among its peers due to its lifelike survival mechanics, making it notably more difficult. Multiple methods of demise await players, such as sickness, infection, ambush, or dehydration. Even the narrative mode plunges gamers into the thick of things with minimal guidance. For seasoned players seeking a tougher challenge, there’s also a permanent death mode available.
In the sprawling, verdant jungle of Green Hell, you’ll find an intricate ecosystem teeming with various plants and animals, some of which can be harnessed for gameplay resources. While the game offers a raw, authentic experience in many aspects, it also presents unexpectedly whimsical elements, particularly when players progress to constructing elaborate structures and tending farms. The choice is yours: tackle the ruthless challenges of this open world or create a capybara sanctuary and give your newfound friend a name!
