Matthew Lillard will once again take on the role of the main antagonist in “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”. A recent teaser for the upcoming sequel provides a first glimpse of Lillard as William Afton.

The “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (FNAF) movie was inspired by Scott Cawthon’s well-known video game series. This horror flick, featuring Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, has been a box office hit and even broke records as Blumhouse’s top-grossing film.

The success of the initial FNAF movie led to an announcement for a sequel, with production for the next film already in progress. In fact, photos from the set have leaked several weeks ago. A recent image offers fans their first glimpse of Lillard’s Afton character.

1. In a livestream on January 25, 2025, YouTuber Dawko announced that he was raising funds to aid victims of the wildfires in Los Angeles. He also revealed that the second FNAF movie will be released later this year. During his stream, Dawko showed three images from FNAF 2, one of which included cast members such as Lillard. Dawko expressed his excitement for the movie and hinted that it would feature flashbacks of William Afton’s character, despite his death in the first movie. In a photo from the set, Lillard can be seen standing on a staircase looking down at director Emma Tammi, who appears to be giving instructions to Elizabeth Lail, who plays Vanessa Shelly. This suggests that Lillard will indeed appear in FNAF 2.

It wasn’t entirely unexpected that Lillard would rejoin FNAF 2 as he had mentioned earlier in an interview that he had agreed to a three-film deal for the project. In February 2023, when asked if he would be in Philadelphia, the Scream star clarified that he wouldn’t due to his involvement with the FNAF projects. During the conversation, Lillard revealed that he was cast in a movie called Five Nights at Freddy’s. He expressed excitement about this new opportunity, as it involved a three-picture deal with Universal and Blumhouse. Unfortunately, his work on this project prevented him from being in Philadelphia at the time.

As a movie critic, I must say that the revelation of Lillard reprising his role as Afton in the upcoming film wasn’t entirely unexpected, given that the second installment serves as a prequel. This allows for clever use of flashbacks to bring him back onto the screen. With Afton being the pivotal antagonist in this franchise, it was only fitting to have him return to further unveil the intricacies and dark secrets behind Freddy’s Fazbear’s Pizza, ensuring a richer tapestry of lore for fans to explore.

Furthermore, the upcoming movie might explore Afton’s involvement in the disappearances of the children, offering a richer narrative and background on his criminal acts. Lillard’s portrayal of Afton was highly praised due to his ability to blend charm, danger, and madness within his villainous character. It goes without saying that Lillard’s reprisal of the role will be one of the key factors driving FNAF fans to theaters when it debuts.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will hit theaters on December 5, 2025.
