Recently, the cast for the DC Show featuring Lanterns has expanded to include Ulrich Thomsen portraying the Green Lantern antagonist, Sinestro. Now, an esteemed digital artist has shared a fresh depiction that gives us a glimpse of what Thomsen might appear as, in a comic-true representation of Sinestro within the DC Universe.
The Green Lantern series, featuring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, was one of the first projects presented by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn when he unveiled his initial DCU slate. This intergalactic police drama centers around an investigation into a murder in the heartland of America. Although specifics about this murder mystery have yet to be disclosed, it’s been revealed that Sinestro will play some role in the show following the casting of Thomsen as the villain in January 2025.
In the same vein as the character in the comics, Deadline’s article stated that Thomsen was cast as Sinestro for the Lanterns series. This Sinestro is a renegade Green Lantern who used to mentor Hal Jordan but now has an unhealthy obsession with him. With production on Lanterns only recently beginning, fans haven’t caught a glimpse of Thomsen’s portrayal of Sinestro yet. However, digital artist BossLogic has shared a conceptual image of what Thomsen might look like as Sinestro, complete with the character’s signature magenta skin and yellow attire. The Sinestro Corps emblem is also visible on his costume in this depiction.
Pierre, Chandler, and Thomsen will be accompanied by their fellow “Lanterns” cast members: Kelly McDonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garrett Dillahunt as William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan, who will portray a potential love interest for John Stewart named Zoe. On Instagram, Ulrich posted a picture of the Deadline report about his “Lanterns” casting, expressing that although he’s unfamiliar with the superhero genre, it promises to be enjoyable. Fortunately for Thomsen, he’ll have many skilled actors to assist him in this new territory.
Damon Lindelof, who is known for creating shows like “Lost”, “The Leftovers”, and HBO’s “Watchmen” series, has collaborated with Chris Mundy and Tom King on a new project titled “Lanterns”. In addition to co-writing the script, Mundy will also serve as the showrunner. The initial two episodes of “Lanterns” will be directed by James Hawes, a director who has previously worked on shows such as “Black Mirror”, “Penny Dreadful”, “Doctor Who”, and numerous others that are highly regarded in their genres. This indicates that there’s an abundance of experienced talent behind-the-scenes, especially when it comes to genre projects that have earned critical acclaim.
Thomas Thomsen gained fame for his role as Kai Proctor on the TV series “Banshee,” and he has a long list of other acting credits as well. Given his extensive background, viewers can feel confident that the character of Sinestro is in good hands. The murder being probed in “Lanterns” is tied to a larger story arc within the DC Universe that Gunn intends to explore. As a result, fans are eager to see how Sinestro fits into this intriguing mystery.
Lanterns is expected to premiere on HBO in 2026.
