Summary
- Dungeons and Dragons’ new Unearthed Arcana introduces eight Forgotten Realms subclasses, including revamped classics.
- Subclasses like Spellfire Sorcerer and Winter Walker Ranger offer new gameplay options.
- Some of the subclasses raise questions about lore consistency in the Forgotten Realms.
Recently, Dungeons & Dragons unveiled a sneak peek at eight Forgotten Realms-inspired subclasses in their latest Unearthed Arcana release. The newcomers include the Spellfire Sorcerer and College of the Moon Bard, while familiar faces like the Knowledge Domain Cleric and Bladesinger Wizard have been given an update. These Dungeons & Dragons playtest subclasses are early versions of what will be featured in the Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide coming out on November 11.
Lately, Dungeons & Dragons unveiled two books: the “Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide” and the “Adventure Guide”. These twin publications will revisit the well-known setting of Faerun, which was highlighted in Baldur’s Gate 3. The book offers fresh backgrounds, subclasses, feats, factions, and even a potent kind of magic spell.
Players have been given a sneak peek at the upcoming subclasses in this sourcebook through an Unearthed Arcana. This preview material showcases all eight of these choices, with five being entirely new. The College of the Moon Bard, a Fey-themed archetype inspired by the Moonshae Isles, is one such novelty. Similarly, the Oath of the Noble Genies Paladin pledges allegiance to the elemental lords from Calimshan. The Winter Walker Ranger wields frost powers that would be fitting in Icewind Dale, and the Scion of the Three Rogue could blend seamlessly into the cults of the Dead Three – Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul – who are commonly based in Baldur’s Gate. Lastly, the Spellfire Sorcerer harnesses the radiant energies often linked to the Chosen of Mystra.
Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide Subclasses
- College Of The Moon Bard
- Knowledge Domain Cleric
- Purple Dragon Knight Fighter
- Oath Of The Noble Genies Paladin
- Winter Walker Ranger
- Scion Of The Three Rogue
- Spellfire Sorcery Sorcerer
- Bladesinger Wizard
As a passionate Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the remaining three subclasses are modernized iterations of those introduced in the 2015 Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide: the Knowledge Domain Cleric, Purple Dragon Knight Fighter, and Bladesinger Wizard. The Knowledge Cleric now boasts access to additional Domain spells, enhanced telepathy abilities, and consistent bonuses for various D20 rolls. For me, the iconic Bladesinger Wizards have been upgraded, allowing them to employ their Intelligence for attacks and striking an adversary post-casting a spell. The Purple Dragon Knights have undergone a massive transformation, now earning an Amethyst Dragon companion similar to the Drakewarden Ranger while preserving some of its original battlefield support capabilities.
While these new subclasses offer engaging mechanics that many fans appreciate, they’ve sparked some debates about the historical lore within the Forgotten Realms. For instance, contrary to popular belief, the Purple Dragon Knights of Cormyr are known for slaying dragons rather than befriending them. Also, the Genies of Calimshan have been historically at odds with humanoid races instead of being their allies. Moreover, a rare ability called Spellfire has only been demonstrated by exceptionally powerful Chosen of Mystra like Elminster, not something common among others. These new additions could potentially hint at some revisions in the timeline of the Forgotten Realms as presented in these upcoming Dungeons and Dragons publications.
Enthusiasts will undoubtedly discover the answers they’re seeking in the “Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide” and “Adventure Guide“. These releases are scheduled for November 11. In the meantime, it’s worth noting that feedback on the fresh Unearthed Arcana will start being accepted on February 4. Therefore, fans should make sure to try out the subclasses before this date.
