HBO announced the release date for the final season of The Righteous Gemstones.
In simple terms, the fourth season of the hilarious dark comedy starring Danny McBride, centered around a family of televangelists and their outrageous escapades, is set to air on television starting from this coming Sunday, March 9th.
Is The Righteous Gemstones Worth Watching?
In my opinion, among the three shows that Danny McBride wrote for HBO, I strongly believe that “The Righteous Gemstones” stands out as the most impressive and fully-realized production.
First came “Eastbound & Down”, which catapulted McBride into mainstream fame. In this show, he played Kenny Powers, a former Major League Baseball player who exhibited the attitude of an overconfident adolescent. Premiering in 2009, the series was distinctive due to its unconventional nature. Despite Kenny being utterly unappealing (yet occasionally endearing), you couldn’t help but cheer for him.
Despite Eastbound & Down being quite entertaining at times, its plot developments and character progressions sometimes fell short. The main allure of the show was largely due to Danny McBride’s captivating charm rather than the narrative itself.
In 2016, McBride resumed work with HBO, debuting the series “Vice Principals“. Compared to his previous work in “Eastbound“, there’s a significant enhancement in storytelling. In “Vice Principals“, McBride continues to portray a character similar to Kenny Powers, but this series provides more opportunities and leans more on its ensemble cast. Notably, the show consists of only two seasons, each focusing on a single narrative arc. By concentrating on the political dynamics within a school setting, McBride (alongside his team) produced more potent, focused episodes, resulting in a more cohesive storyline.
In 2019, McBride brought back a unique and outstanding comedy series titled “Righteous Gemstones“. It combines the grand ideas and charm from “Eastbound” with the exceptional storytelling skills demonstrated in “Vice Principals“. This blend results in an audacious, dynamic show that stands out among the best comedies of this century.
I greatly appreciate how Danny McBride has mastered the art of distributing the limelight in “Righteous Gemstones”. In “Eastbound”, he was undeniably the main focus. Similarly, in “Vice Principals”, he took a slightly more prominent role compared to his co-leads. However, in “Gemstones”, McBride skillfully sets up Adam Devine, Edi Patterson, Tim Baltz, Skyler Gisondo, and others for outstanding performances by creating ample room for their brilliance to shine.
As a die-hard fan, I mustn’t forget to praise Walton Goggins for his unforgettable portrayal of Uncle Baby Billy. This man is nothing short of legendary; he has an uncanny ability to outshine every production he graces with his presence. He’s left indelible marks on classics like The Shield and Justified. However, in my humble opinion, Uncle Baby Billy might just be his finest work yet.
So, yes, go watch The Righteous Gemstones. And then tune in, March 9, for the Season 4 premiere.
