As a die-hard Marvel fan, it seems the Darkhold is being sealed once more in the Agatha All Along season 2, according to Jac Schaeffer’s Disney+ series that might just live up to its ‘limited series’ tagline. While many were disheartened by the absence of WandaVision season 2, Agatha All Along stepped up as a sort of spiritual successor. Sadly, it appears Agatha won’t be gathering a new coven any time soon.

The story titled “Agatha All Along” predominantly revolved around Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), guiding her coven along the legendary Witches’ Path. However, it quickly emerged that Agatha wasn’t the sole protagonist. Characters like Joe Locke’s Billy Maximoff/Wiccan were brought into play, and a significant twist unfolded as Aubrey Plaza was unveiled as Lady Death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the narrative concluded satisfyingly by episode 9, viewers eagerly anticipated that the potential second season of “Agatha All Along” would soar on its broomstick.

Agatha All Along Season 2 Gets a Disappointing Update

Agatha All Along offered a refreshing change when the MCU was grappling with criticisms of overexposure. Following underwhelming performances in Secret Invasion and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, along with Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels being labeled a box office flop, Agatha All Along emerged as a delightful, campy classic. Unfortunately, Patti LuPone’s remarks have largely dashed any hopes for a second season.

According to Lilia Caldera, who talked to Andy Cohen on his podcast, she mentioned that Disney was considering another season of the show with Schaeffer, but the show’s creator rejected this proposal, as expressed by Patti LuPone herself.

[Schaffer] expressed, ‘I’m not into second seasons.’ She explained, ‘They proposed a second season of WandaVision, but I declined.’ She added, ‘There’s an overwhelming amount of writing,’ so instead, she works on standalone projects. I truly hope and wish for the opportunity to collaborate with her again in the future as she is nothing short of magical.

Learning about Lilia’s destiny and urging Schaeffer to reappear, LuPone’s plea hinted at a possible return. Marvel Studios Television surprisingly placed Agatha All Along in the Best Comedy Series categories for the Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG awards rather than the Limited Series or Anthology ones, fueling suspicions that a second season of Agatha All Along might be underway.

It’s not too shocking that Schaeffer’s thoughts aren’t surprising, given that WandaVision is widely regarded as one of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s finest works, yet it didn’t receive a follow-up season. Director Matt Shakman emphasized that Agatha All Along isn’t WandaVision season 2, but rather its own distinct storyline. Although Hahn and a few other characters from WandaVision reappear in Agatha All Along, it successfully forged its unique path. It’s worth noting that Marvel Television Studios typically doesn’t commission second seasons, with Loki and the forthcoming Daredevil: Born Again being exceptions. Most of its live-action shows haven’t been renewed for additional seasons.

We Don’t Need Agatha All Along Season 2

From my perspective as a fan, it’s fascinating to speculate about the possibilities for Agatha All Along season 2, especially given the eerie introduction of a spectral Harkness, reminiscent of the 2015 Scarlet Witch #1 comics. Although Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha didn’t meet her comic book demise at the hands of an angry Wanda Maximoff, there were subtle indications of where the story might be headed. In contrast to her comic counterpart who aided Wanda, the season 1 finale of Agatha presented a twist, with Agatha departing with Billy to search for his brother, Tommy.

Another way of expressing this could be: In addition to other points, it’s worth noting that Agatha All Along didn’t explore the possibilities of the Darkhold. The TV show WandaVision hinted at the potential impact of the Book of the Damned on the magical aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although it appeared to be destroyed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse, mentions of the Darkhold in Agatha All Along sparked speculation that it might tie into a larger narrative. Furthermore, had there been a season 2 for Agatha All Along, it could have delved into the rumored Mephisto character portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen, who was first mentioned in the MCU but missed out on an appearance in season 1.

Even though these events don’t necessarily have to take place in an official season 2 of “Agatha All Along”, both “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along” had distinctive themes that set them apart. They seemed like distant relatives with a familiar touch, but they are distinctly separate narratives. However unconventional, a new series from Schaeffer could emerge based on Sasheer Zamata’s outstanding portrayal of Jennifer Kale, potentially providing fans with a much grittier “Midnight Sons” miniseries. Schaeffer could gather obscure characters like Gael García Bernal’s Werewolf by Knight, Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight, and even a new Ghost Rider, once more doing something fresh in this manner.

Currently, Agatha All Along remains unaffected by any potential damage that season 2 might bring, as there’s still a possibility that the showrunner could lead a WandaVision spin-off series. Although she hasn’t confirmed her departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she has stated her disinterest in doing second seasons. Additionally, her recent comments about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, expressing a desire to see more of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, have fueled speculation. While this isn’t definite proof that she’s working on something new with the character, given rumors of a future Scarlet Witch solo movie, she would be a likely candidate for the director role.

While on staff, Schaeffer can still offer guidance for the TV series “Vision Quest,” starring Paul Bettany and led by Terry Matalas. As more cast members join, including James Spader, there’s a chance Locke and Hahn might reappear to keep searching for Tommy. Some speculate that Wiccan could get his own miniseries to wrap up “Agatha”‘s unresolved plot points. If rumors about Olsen’s role in “Avengers: Secret Wars” are true, this could seamlessly lead into a potential Scarlet Witch film. Despite the speculation, Schaeffer’s success with two back-to-back hits ensures he’ll remain a sought-after talent for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
