Midnight Society Closes Doors Without Releasing A Game

Summary

  • Midnight Society, founded by Dr. Disrespect, closes after 3 years with nothing to show.
  • Deadrop, their game, aimed to integrate NFTs, but first gameplay revealed in 2022 only.
  • Closure follows layoffs related to Dr. Disrespect’s Twitch scandal, adding to the list of recent studio closures.

Established in 2022, Dr. Disrespect’s content creation studio, known as Midnight Society, has ceased operations. The studio officially confirmed this news on their social media platforms today.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the creation of “Deadrop” by the Midnight Society. This exciting venture promises an immersive, community-driven online PvP multiplayer environment. What sets it apart is its innovative integration of NFTs, offering a unique “Founders Pass” to early adopters like myself.

Midnight Society Sleeps For Good Without Anything To Show For Three Years

The announcement was made on Twitter/X by the Midnight Society account.

Today marks the bittersweet news that The Midnight Society is set to shut down following a remarkable run of three years. A fantastic group of more than 55 talented developers have been instrumental in creating our latest project, Deadrop. This was shared by the studio itself.

In addition to the update, the studio mentions they’re actively looking for other game studios who might be keen on providing job opportunities for our skilled team members.

The studio finishes by apologizing for how they were unable to reach their “ultimate goal.”

Since the studio initially showed us a sneak peek of Deadrop’s gameplay back in 2022, with no further public updates since then, this news about its silence doesn’t come as much of a shock.

Regarding Deadrop, Midnight Society refers to it as “the latest free-to-play first-person shooter with a vertical extraction mechanic, set in a gritty, unrelenting future that has perpetually stuck in the ’80s.

Indeed, last year saw a rapid decline for the startup when Dr. Disrespect (whose real name is Herschel “Guy” Beahm) was embroiled in a Twitch sexting scandal. Although the content creator distanced himself from the studio he established, it undoubtedly had a negative impact on the fledgling company.

Last September, the studio experienced significant difficulties leading to a wave of substantial job cuts.

Today’s revelation marks the end of an era, and it wasn’t entirely unexpected. Unfortunately, job losses are never a positive development, and our hearts go out to those impacted at the studio. We sincerely hope they find new opportunities swiftly.

At midnight in early 2025, Midnight Society became a part of Phoenix Labs, which is one of Ubisoft’s UK-based studios. This move came as a result of some game development studios closing their doors during the first month of that year.
