Each shriek from her serves as a warning to surrounding creatures, revealing the player’s position. Whether her screams are intended or simply a reaction to their presence is immaterial; both possibilities instill terror and evoke an overwhelming feeling of sorrow.
8. The Reaper Leviathans
Subnautica
Subnautica intensifies fear of the deep sea through its immersive environment, while the appearance of towering Reaper Leviathans adds to this unease on the underwater planet 4546B. These enormous marine creatures are roughly as big as the submersible players control, and they have the power to seize the smaller vessel and violently shake it with their powerful jaws.
The colossal beast Leviathan will encircle its victims, launching attacks from unanticipated angles. A horn protruding from its head functions much like a ram during charge. As it hurtles towards its target, its terrifying open maw and abyssal eyes are the final sights the prey beholds before being overtaken by the imminent attack.
7. The Typhon

On the Talos I space station, scientists have been housing enigmatic extraterrestrials known as the Typhon for research purposes, attempting to understand their neural structures and harness their abilities using Neuromods. However, the story unfolds in Prey, suggesting that these bizarre aliens have somehow escaped confinement, spreading an infection throughout the station. The Typhon’s physiology is incredibly alien, appearing as a glistening, shimmering mixture of grey-black matter that can transform between solid, liquid, and gaseous states simultaneously. Their forms range from spider-like creatures, hovering orbs, to humanoid figures with glitchy characteristics.
The enigmatic nature and mysterious origins of these entities instill great fear, further intensified by their conquest of the space station. They exhibit unique capabilities, including shape-shifting, transportation through space, and psychokinesis. However, they can typically be subdued through physical force.
6. Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime Trilogy
As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share some intriguing details about a fascinating alien creature known as the Metroid. Originating from the distant planet SR388, this species is unique in many ways. Among them is the enigmatic character called Metroid Prime. This highly mutated and intelligent Metroid of unknown origins has been significantly altered by an extraordinary substance called Phazon, a highly radioactive material renowned for its extreme mutagenic effects and energy-producing properties.
Metroid Prime stands guard over Tallon IV’s Leviathan, one of the Phazon Meteors that are infamous for spreading this powerful substance throughout the galaxy.
What makes Metroid Prime truly chilling is its massive size, biomechanical structure, and ability to change tactics in combat during multi-stage battles. The Chozo, an ancient alien race, predicted that their homeworld Tallon IV would be overtaken by a great evil, which they called the Worm. Interestingly, this prediction seems fitting as Metroid Prime’s influence appears to have burrowed deep into the planet, and Phazon Meteors travel through wormholes to disseminate their mutagenic properties.
5. Icon Of Sin
DOOM Series
In the game DOOM 2, the Icon of Sin made its initial appearance. Its background was fleshed out in DOOM (2016), and its complete terrifying form was unveiled in DOOM Eternal. The Icon of Sin is a monstrous, world-devouring predator from another dimension, a demonic lifeform capable of ripping open realities and summoning the armies of Hell onto Earth. In the climactic fight in London, the Harbinger makes its appearance and unleashes a catastrophic assault on the troops trying to get to the Citadel. This is a crucial moment in the Mass Effect storyline where Shepard must make a decisive decision. The Harbinger’s immense power and intentions are so ominous that it calls for an ancient and intricate superweapon to counterbalance it.
3. The Zerg

Innumerable fearsome characteristics make the Zerg an intimidating entity, making it challenging to single out one particular monster. The Zerg are not just any aliens; they’re a ruthless blend of biotechnologically advanced arthropods functioning under a collective consciousness known as a hivemind. Across the cosmos, these beings mercilessly chase down and absorb advanced species. In the storyline of StarCraft 2, their aggression is further intensified with the assistance of Sarah Kerrigan, a powerful Terran who has been infested by the Zerg Swarm and eventually transforms into a cosmic force.
In simpler terms, the Zerg, also known as the Swarm, originated from an ancient conflict between the xel’naga, a super-advanced race predating the main factions in the StarCraft universe. Over time and under the control of the Overmind, the Zerg grew vastly in size and militarized, launching attacks on their adversaries by deploying various species.

In the realm of video games, The Flood from the Halo series stands out as one of the most chilling and legendary alien dangers. This parasitic entity functions as a collective hive mind, possessing the power to assimilate and transform entire civilizations. The Flood’s objective is to spread its infection to any intelligent life form of adequate size; anything that falls under this category is also referred to as The Flood itself.
In ancient times, these harmful creatures were so destructive that the advanced Forerunners constructed colossal ringworld weapons called Halos as a final defense mechanism. These deadly devices were used to eradicate all intelligent life within a local galaxy when all else failed, in order to prevent the spread of the Flood by depriving it of food sources. The lethal potential of even a single Flood spore should compel anyone to resort to extreme measures.

Dead Space Series
In comparison to creatures like the Flood and the Zerg, which also exhibit parasitic assimilation, the Necromorphs from Dead Space might just be the most terrifying embodiment of this concept. These Necromorphs are actually reanimated dead bodies and tissues that have been transformed into new shapes due to an infection traced back to a genetic code carved onto and spread by alien “Markers.
As an avid enthusiast, I can’t help but share my fascination with these mysterious double-helix obelisks that mysteriously appeared near our planet. These extraterrestrial structures seemed to initiate Necromorph infestations, turning the ordinary into horrifying nightmares. The worst part was, a cataclysmic event, known as the Convergence, happened, merging the masses of fleshy organisms into what we now call the Brethren Moon.
The terror of the Necromorphs and the Brethren Moon surpasses that of the Flood’s spore-based horror, for these entities have a unique ability to reanimate even the most infected tissues, thanks to the enigmatic Markers. Regardless of the extent of infection or damage, the Markers and Necromorphs always seem to find a way to regenerate and persist, making them truly formidable adversaries in this cosmic game of survival.
