Summary
- Midnight Society is shutting down, ending work on Deadrop.
- Dr. Disrespect was previously removed from the studio.
- The studio is looking for employment opportunities for its developers.
The team behind Dr Disrespect, who co-founded the production company known as Midnight Society, has shared the tough news of their studio’s closure. Previously engaged in developing a first-person shooter game titled “Deadrop”, the project encountered criticism due to its integration of NFTs. Despite past assurances to fans that they were continuing without Dr Disrespect amidst controversies surrounding him, Midnight Society has now decided to disband.
In the previous year, a past employee of Twitch alleged that Dr Disrespect was suspended due to allegations of sending explicit messages to a minor through the platform’s Whisper feature. The streamer didn’t directly refute the claim but did acknowledge sending inappropriate jokes to a minor on Twitch Whisper. This scandal caused Dr Disrespect to lose various sponsorship deals, be de-monetized on YouTube, and step down from his position at Midnight Society.
Despite Dr Disrespect’s departure, Midnight Society assured that they were still developing the game called Deadrop, with many fans anticipating its release this year. However, Dr Disrespect had earlier suggested that Deadrop might debut in 2024, but it never materialized. Sadly, Midnight Society announced on social media that they are closing down and cancelling Deadrop after three years of development. In a statement, they expressed their appreciation to the developers who worked on Deadrop and the community that supported them. They are currently seeking other game studios that would provide employment opportunities for their 55 developers.
Midnight Society’s Closure Has an Interesting Coincidence
In response to the game Deadrop, numerous gamers expressed hopes that Midnight Society would offer refunds to its supporters. Additionally, some requested the developer release the development build so the community could complete the game themselves. Simultaneously, others noted that Midnight Society shut down on the same day as Dr Disrespect’s reported re-monetization on YouTube. Dr Disrespect had been trying to reverse his YouTube demonetization and was denied multiple times, but it appears he has finally achieved success with this latest attempt.
It hasn’t been proven that the shutdown of Midnight Society was due to Dr Disrespect’s remonetization, but it’s hard not to notice that the studio’s announcement coincided with Jake Lucky’s tweet about the same topic just an hour earlier. Additionally, Dr Disrespect himself acknowledged his remonetization on Twitter soon after. Sadly, this closure has resulted in job losses for some developers, and many are hoping they will find new opportunities in other game development companies.
Currently, Dr Disrespect is frequently streaming on YouTube, garnering thousands of viewers, and he was among the top streamers last October. However, he hasn’t yet commented on the closure of Midnight Society or the cancellation of Deadrop. Some online speculate that his comments might not be positive.
