As a gamer, I’m thrilled to have Ares, the mighty God of War, now on the Marvel heroes roster in SNAP, following the app’s contentious ban in the US. With players set to be reimbursed for the inconvenience, there’s a growing buzz about investing in Ares due to the anticipated surplus of resources. But is he really worth it? What’s the best deck structure for Ares in the current Marvel SNAP metagame? All these questions and more are addressed in the following guide.
Ares (4–6)
On Comparison: Check the strength of the first three cards from each deck you own. If the combined power of your cards is greater, you gain +6 Power.
Series: Five (Ultra Rare)
Season: Dark Avengers
Release: January 28, 2025
The Best Deck for Ares
Ares fits seamlessly within the Surtur-Skaar construct. To include him in this deck layout, you’ll also require these cards: Phastos, Okoye, Zabu, Attuma, Crossbones, Armor, The Hood, Cassandra Nova, and Cull Obsidian.
Card | Cost | Power |
---|---|---|
Ares | 4 | 6 |
Cassandra Nova | 3 | 0 |
Phastos | 3 | 3 |
Okoye | 2 | 3 |
Surtur | 3 | 4 |
Zabu | 1 | 2 |
The Hood | 1 | -3 |
Attuma | 4 | 10 |
Crossbones | 4 | 10 |
Armor | 2 | 3 |
Skaar | 6 | 10 |
Cull Obsidian | 4 | 10 |
Ares Deck Synergies
- Okoye and Phastos help buff the deck, so your chances of beating the enemy in Ares’s comparison phase are higher.
- Cassandra Nova also contributes to Ares’s effect by stealing Power from the enemy deck.
- Ares, Attuma, Crossbones, and Cull Obsidian create your primary win conditions, buffing Surtur and discounting Skaar.
- Zabu ensures you can drop more four-Costs.
- The Hood gives you the Demon, a six-Power one-Cost drop. You can later get rid of The Hood itself using Attuma.
- Armor is your tech card to protect the lines with the highest risk.
To maintain a more balanced gameplay and ensure consistent performance, think about replacing either Phastos or Okoye with a technology card such as Cosmo or Shadow King instead of relying so much on maximizing Ares’s effect.
How to Play Ares Effectively
Here are some notes to keep in mind:
- Prepare the deck before dropping Ares. You want to ensure that your side is stronger than the opponent’s. So, before dropping Ares, it would be ideal to either buff your deck with cards like Okoye or Phastos or debuff the enemy’s deck with Cassandra Nova.
- Don’t leave Ares unprotected. You are likely to have Ares get buffed before round five, making him an easy target for Shang-Chi and Shadow King. If you don’t want that to happen, play Ares in a protected lane, maybe the one with Armor.
- Drop Ares as soon as you read the enemy’s deck. Pay close attention to what your enemy drops before deciding whether it’s the right time to let Ares lose. For instance, if they cannot play in the early rounds, this might mean they’ve already drawn their high-Cost (and likely high-Power) cards. So, your chance of beating their deck is higher.
How to Counter Ares
In the game of Marvel SNAP, Ares is generally straightforward to challenge. Characters such as Cosmo, Shang-Chi, and Shadow King can effortlessly thwart him. Yet, there are unconventional methods to counter Ares too, for instance, Cassandra Nova, who siphons Power from your deck, making using Ares a riskier move. Additionally, deck manipulators like Korg and Rockslide are effective against Ares, but their impact depends on luck – use them with caution.
Is Ares Worth It?
Investing in Ares is secure, whether you acquire it through tokens or another method. You’ll undoubtedly discover several appealing deck templates for him. Unlike some other cards released within the same range, Ares is unlikely to vanish from SNAP within a few weeks. However, it’s important to remember that Ares is an easy-to-counter card, so constructing a highly competitive deck around him may not be straightforward.
In simpler terms, should Ares be added to your collection? If you’ve been enjoying decks with large, impactful cards like Skaar decks, then Ares is definitely a card worth considering. However, if you prefer more strategic gameplay involving complex interactions between cards, Ares may not be the best choice for you. Ares is often found in “Big Dumb Drop” strategies, which are not inherently bad, but they typically rely on basic synergies rather than intricate ones.
