As the day of Scream 7‘s official production draws near, more cast members are being brought on board, and I must admit, the latest addition to the Scream 7 roster has me raising an eyebrow or two. This newcomer’s involvement in the upcoming installment of this long-running series leaves me wondering about how their character fits into the storyline of the movie.
In the upcoming film “Scream 7”, Melissa Barrera won’t be part of the cast, but fans can expect a number of familiar faces returning as if they were coming back home. Leading this return is Sidney Prescott. Additionally, there will be some fresh faces joining the series, including Sidney’s spouse, who isn’t Patrick Dempsey, contrary to earlier expectations. Moreover, there have been some unexpected twists in the revival of some classic antagonists from the series. This includes the recent casting news.
Original Ghostface Is Back For Scream 7
According to Deadline, actor Matthew Lillard has signed on for ‘Scream 7’. Interestingly, this news suggests a return to his character, Stu Macher, a role he played in earlier Scream movies. This is surprising given that it was widely believed that Stu met his end in the first Scream film. Intriguingly, Stu and Billy Loomis were the original Ghostfaces, which introduced an exciting twist in the initial movie by making them appear innocent while the real killer continued to commit murders.
Including Lillard’s character as a surprise return can be seen as a tribute to die-hard “Scream” fans who speculated about his potential survival due to the lack of on-screen confirmation of his death at the end of the original film. Given the extent of the injuries he sustained, it would seem improbable for him to have survived; however, some theorize that he might have been in a coma or rehabilitation center all these years.
Indeed, given his experience, it’s likely he sustained injuries severe enough to make survival challenging. However, there are those who speculate he might have spent these years in a care facility, either in a coma or recovering from illness.
A day following the confirmation of another classic antagonist’s comeback for Scream 7, news broke out that Stu Macher would also reappear. Earlier in the week, Scott Foley had been added to the cast, with his character Roman Bridger set to return as well. This is quite a surprise twist since Bridger was believed dead at the end of Scream 3, having been revealed as that movie’s Ghostface. The simultaneous appearances of these two villains in Scream 7 have naturally sparked many intriguing questions about how everything will unfold.
One idea floating around is that Bridger might reappear similarly to Bill Loomis in Scream 5, appearing as a hallucination for one of the characters. If Stu Macher somehow managed to survive and his condition allows him to engage with other returning characters in the series, he could serve as a sort of “spiritual presence.” Given Sidney Prescott’s return, it’s not implausible that she could perceive these characters in her mind or even converse with them. The specifics will be revealed in Scream 7, scheduled for release in theaters in February of 2026.
