As per a recent report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the workforce at BioWare has significantly shrunk. The company, which once employed over 200 individuals, now has fewer than 100 staff members.
The report indicates that some employees temporarily assigned to new teams were told their team switches would be permanent, effectively ending their employment with BioWare in other departments.
Furthermore, Schreier’s findings support TopMob’s unique report that a substantial number, approximately “dozens,” of individuals were terminated during this round of layoffs at the studio.
Schreier states that if someone aims to work at BioWare again in the future, they’ll need to seek job openings and re-apply. Currently, a compact team is working on the next Mass Effect game. This team is being directed by a longtime employee who was instrumental in developing the original trilogy as well as 2019’s Anthem. The plan is to grow the team as necessary during later stages of production.
According to sources speaking on condition of anonymity after BioWare’s memo was made public, there’s ongoing internal assessment aiming to identify areas for improvement. There remains concern among these sources that further job cuts and changes within the studio may be imminent.
No response has been received from either EA or BioWare regarding numerous inquiries about the current situation at their studio.
