Regrettably for those PlayStation Plus subscribers still using PlayStation 4 who have not upgraded to PS5, Sony has declared that providing PS4 games as a significant advantage of the service will cease from January 2026 onwards. Since its inception during the PS3 era, PlayStation Plus has undergone numerous transformations over time.
Initially, PS Plus provided subscribers with special discounts on games and a monthly selection of free games. Upon the arrival of the PS4, online multiplayer was added as an additional feature, causing some debate since it had been free on the PS3. When the PS5 debuted, not much changed in PS Plus until later when it underwent a transformation to offer multiple tiers. The basic version of PS Plus, known as PS Plus Essential, retains its original focus on monthly free games, while PS Plus Extra provides access to a vast collection of titles for both the PS4 and PS5. Lastly, PS Plus Premium combines all the features of the lower tiers with added access to classic games.
Over time, PlayStation Plus has evolved, leaving behind Sony consoles such as the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita. In due course, the PS4 will also follow suit. Sony has announced that from January 2026, it will no longer prioritize providing PS4 games as a significant advantage of the service, whether for the monthly free PlayStation Plus games or the games added to the Game Catalog through PlayStation Plus Extra. While there may still be some PS4 games accessible via PlayStation Plus after this date, fans should not anticipate them being offered on a monthly basis like they are now.
When Will PS4 Games No Longer Be a Key Benefit of PS Plus?

Approaching five years since its release, it’s understandable that Sony might be reducing support for the PlayStation 4. However, given its vast user base, many of whom are yet to upgrade to the PlayStation 5, they might not appreciate learning that their PlayStation Plus benefits will be diminished in January 2026. On a positive note, these users have close to a year to acquire a PS5 before these changes take place.
In addition to Sony’s announcement regarding changes in their PS Plus service for the PS4, they also unveiled the free games that members can enjoy in February 2025. For those who may have overlooked the announcement, the upcoming free PS Plus titles for February 2025 include the action-packed game “Payday 3”, the humorous adventure game “High on Life”, and the classic revamped version of “Pac-Man World: Re-Pac”.
