On Tuesday, February 4, the galaxies of Destiny 2 and Star Wars will merge. This cross-over, announced on January 28, coincides with Destiny 2’s latest expansion, Heresy-Act 1, which is also the third episode and final chapter of the Light and Darkness Saga. In this expansion, players can acquire new armor for their Hunters, Titans, and Warlocks that are modeled after some of the Galactic Empire’s most recognized troops, such as Stormtroopers, Death Troopers, and Royal Guards. Although the cross-over includes Star Wars-themed cosmetics, it appears that a chance to equip lightsaber skins for swords was either overlooked or not included.
Destiny 2’s Star Wars Features and Absences
In the Star Wars universe, Hunters can obtain the Covert Ranger armor, similar to that worn by Death Troopers from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016. Unlike traditional Hunter armor, this one doesn’t include a helmet hood but does come with their signature cloak. On the other hand, Titans can acquire the Shock Enforcer armor, modeled after common Stormtrooper gear. Warlocks will have access to the Royal Protector armor, patterned after the Imperial Royal Guard armor. It seems that the Warlock’s Royal Protector Bond is inspired by the Royal Guards’ force pikes.
In addition to the Galactic Empire-themed armor, Star Wars-themed items are also coming to Destiny 2. One of these is a new Ghost Shell inspired by the Death Star II Mobile Battle Station from Return of the Jedi. This Shell features a green superlaser reminiscent of the Death Star’s superlaser dish, with the laser located along the equator, similar to the original Death Star design. Players may also be able to pilot a TIE Advanced x1-inspired ship and a Sparrow that resembles a 74-Z speeder bike, hinted by the frequent Imperial iconography.
Missing Star Wars Features in the Destiny 2 Crossover
In addition to fresh Star Wars-themed emotes and finishers, along with new cosmetics, players are disappointed about the absence of lightsaber ornaments for swords or specific sword types. Although we might see lightsaber emotes, they may not satisfy many fans who find them inadequate. The lightsaber is undeniably one of the most recognized weapons in the Star Wars universe, and its omission from this crossover event is unexpected because it has been featured in other crossovers like Fortnite and Soulcalibur. Some ideas for incorporating lightsabers could be to release them as limited-time skins for Hive cleavers until the next Heresy act, or create skins for rare and exotic swords such as Ergo Sum and Half-Truths.
Potential Content in Future Destiny 2 Star Wars Crossovers
If the collaboration between Bungie and Lucasfilm on the Destiny 2 Star Wars crossover receives positive feedback from fans of both series, there’s a possibility they could team up again for future crossover events. Given that the upcoming event leans heavily towards the Imperial side, future collaborations might explore other aspects of the Star Wars universe, like the Jedi, Sith, Clone Wars, High Republic, or First Order-Resistance War. This could give Guardians the opportunity to wear armor beyond imperial uniforms, such as Jedi and Sith robes. Furthermore, players might have the chance to obtain other Star Wars themed cosmetics, such as a ship modeled after an X-Wing or a Ghost Shell inspired by R2-D2.
In terms of gameplay, potential collaborations between Destiny 2 and Star Wars might enable players to obtain lightsaber variants modeled after prominent or powerful weapons in the game. To enhance this feature, Bungie could also craft guns reminiscent of famous Star Wars blasters, like Han Solo’s DL-44 pistol, Chewbacca’s bowcaster, or Din Djarin’s Amban phase-pulse blaster. Additionally, Bungie may introduce temporary Star Wars skins for certain Destiny enemies, such as Super Battle Droid skins for the Vex or Stormtrooper skins for the Cabal. These elements could make future Destiny 2 x Star Wars crossovers the most detailed and extensive in the MMO’s history.
Star Wars marks the second instance where Destiny has collaborated with a property outside of video games, following a minor Ghostbusters crossover last year. So far, its other collaborations have been with other game franchises like Assassin’s Creed and For Honor.
