Summary
- Fans have been hoping for a sequel to Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare for 15 years.
- Instead of zombies, a new Undead Nightmare could explore aliens based on hints in Rockstar’s previous games.
- A potential title like “Unearthly Nightmare” could see Dutch’s gang facing extraterrestrial threats with humor and gameplay adjacent to the original Undead Nightmare.
Since its initial emergence from the grave back in 2010, “Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare” has continued to be a beloved title among fans, leaving many yearning for more. This downloadable content for “RDR” might have seemed somewhat unanticipated given the raw realism and deeply emotional main storyline, but with “Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare”, Rockstar Games delivered an alternate tale that was both chilling and humorous in turns. It seamlessly integrated within the intricate Old West environment and has since become one of the most cherished additions to the series.
For 15 years now, there’s been a lot of demand for another adventure similar to the original “Undead Nightmare”, but it hasn’t happened yet. If they were to bring it back, a new “Undead Nightmare” doesn’t need to be an exact replica of the initial zombie apocalypse. Another wild idea that could work as a basis is already present in both “Red Dead Redemption” and “Grand Theft Auto” series. These franchises have hinted at aliens and UFOs, although these elements have been mostly hidden secrets or Easter eggs until now. However, these could be developed into a full-fledged sequel to “Undead Nightmare”.
Rockstar Could Finally Pull the Trigger on All Its Alien Teasers in a Potential Undead Nightmare Successor
Rockstar Has Increasingly Featured UFOs Across its Major Franchises
The buzz about hidden UFOs and aliens in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas initially appeared as a fan theory, but eventually turned out to be true. Rockstar Games fueled the speculation by incorporating references to extraterrestrial visitors in their future releases, with GTA 5 providing the strongest evidence of UFOs. By the time Red Dead Redemption 2 was released, it seemed clear that aliens were present in both game worlds.
Set for release this year, Grand Theft Auto 6 is likely to keep the UFO tradition going.
A Second Undead Nightmare Could Have a Field Day With a ‘Cowboys Versus Aliens’ Framework
In essence, Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) subtly references Undead Nightmare but doesn’t develop it much further. Conversely, the UFO encounter in RDR2 is its most extensive to date, opening up opportunities for further exploration. The concept of aliens invading the Old West, as portrayed in the 2011 film Cowboys & Aliens starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, closely aligns with RED’s world and gameplay mechanics. In fact, the premise from Cowboys & Aliens could seamlessly fit within the universe of Red Dead.
In other words, since the standalone game “Undead Nightmare” presents an alternate scenario, Rockstar Games has the freedom to create another version, this time swapping out zombies for an alien invasion. The story could revolve around some members of Dutch Van der Linde’s gang getting kidnapped by aliens, forcing the rest to mount a rescue mission amidst chaotic extraterrestrial activity across the frontier. This setup would offer plenty of opportunities for the same witty humor found in “Undead Nightmare,” especially when contrasted with Arthur Morgan’s serious personality. Additionally, it could introduce terrifying elements as he confronts an otherworldly menace. From a gameplay perspective, this version might provide players with exciting new gadgets like ray-guns and teleporters to utilize.
Despite many fans accepting the fact that a sequel to Undead Nightmare might not occur anytime soon, there remains a glimmer of hope that it could eventually materialize. Given the high interest in Rockstar producing content similar to Undead Nightmare, and considering the frequent appearance of extraterrestrial elements in their games, a DLC titled “Cosmic Nightmare” that combines these themes could be highly effective and warmly received.
