Recently, we shared news about Simu Liu, the star of Shang-Chi, discussing film rights for the video game Sleeping Dogs. Earlier efforts to adapt it into a movie were attempted by Donnie Yen, both in Hong Kong and Hollywood, but those attempts didn’t work out.
According to an unnamed source, it seems that the distances are actually greater than what Liu suggested.
Simu Liu Cast As Wei Shen In Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation Its Reported
A source familiar with the project shares with IGN that the movie is currently under active development, surpassing the stage of rights negotiations. It should come as no surprise that Simu Liu has been cast to portray the main character, Wei Shen.
Square Enix has not issued a statement about this when pressed for comment.
Since Liu has been deeply involved in the project, it makes sense that his role will serve as a showcase for the actor. Additionally, considering Liu is a Canadian of Chinese descent and demonstrated impressive action skills in Shang-Chi, it seems fitting that he’s capable of handling this role.
Further information regarding the upcoming film was not disclosed beyond its existence, making it unclear if the movie will be a faithful representation of the original game or not.
2012 saw the debut of Sleeping Dogs, a game initially created by United Front Games (now out of business). The storyline centers around Wei Shen, an undercover cop who embeds himself within the Sun On Yee Triad gang. Critics praised Sleeping Dogs upon release, but it ultimately fell short of Square Enix’s sales projections.
Over time, the action game has earned its place as a cult classic, with enthusiasts repeatedly asking for a follow-up. Interestingly, Liu himself has expressed interest in a sequel to the game, apart from his movie projects. It’s possible that if the film succeeds, Square Enix might consider re-releasing an updated version of the game and potentially create a new installment based on it.
2012 saw me giving Sleeping Dogs a 9/10 in my review. I raved about it being an open-world thriller that perfectly balances storytelling and character development without compromising either. Its hand-to-hand combat system is top-notch, making it one of the best in gaming. Add to that fantastic driving mechanics, brilliant writing, and a captivating setting, Sleeping Dogs quickly became my go-to game when I needed a fix of action, narrative, and charm – no debate necessary!
In an exciting turn of events, I’ll soon be gracing the big screen in the gripping drama, “Last Breath,” sharing it with the legendary Woody Harrelson. This heart-stopping tale is slated to premiere later this month! The storyline follows a group of experienced deep-sea divers as they bravely confront the fury of the ocean’s depths in an attempt to rescue their comrade, who finds himself trapped hundreds of feet beneath the surface. Buckle up for an unforgettable adventure!
