It appears that even with Mortal Kombat 1 having been launched in September 2023 and additional content still to come, NetherRealm Studios seems to be gearing up for their next undertaking.
During a recent interview, studio head Ed Boon disclosed that while working on Mortal Kombat 1, they had already decided on their future plans.
NetherRealm Is Sowing Seeds For Their Current Project
In The Fourth Curtain podcast on Eventhubs, Boon discusses NetherRealm Studios’ approach to creating their upcoming projects. He clarifies that they don’t sit down after finishing a game and wonder “What should we do next?” Instead, they have already decided on the direction for their future projects long before the previous one is completed.
Moving forward with our discussion, Boon mentions, “Regarding the upcoming game, I wish I could break the news here, but it might lead to some trouble.” In other words, he says, “We’re currently focusing on expanding Mortal Kombat 1 with new characters and more, while also setting up for the next game in the series.
As a dedicated gamer, my gut feeling tells me that the upcoming game from the studio could very well be the next installment of Mortal Kombat, possibly named something like Mortal Kombat 2 or even Mortal Kombat 1-2. However, considering the series has undergone a title refresh, I’m not entirely sure. It’s also plausible that we might see a new addition to the Injustice franchise, as it’s been quite some time since we’ve had a fresh DC Universe fighting game, with the last one being released in 2017. Given the passage of time, I think it’s high time for another one!
First, let’s discuss NetherRealm Studios’ current project, which appears to be the addition of a potential last DLC character for Mortal Kombat 1, namely the T-1000. It remains unclear if there will be another DLC pack upon the completion of Khaos Reigns.
If the studio has any announcements coming up – be it a new DLC or a fresh game – it’s likely we’ll hear about it in August, as Mortal Kombat 1 has been officially included in the Evo 2025 lineup. The advantage for NetherRealm Studios is that their parent company, Warner Bros., has openly expressed an interest in prioritizing Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, and DC-themed games in their future projects.
