Under the leadership of Donald Trump, the U.S. government is planning to instate fresh trade taxes on various nations like Canada, Mexico, and China. These taxes may affect several sectors, such as the video game industry, which has sparked a reaction from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).
In a statement addressed to Kotaku, the organization is urging Trump and the U.S. administration to engage in consultation to prevent potential damage or adversity to American citizens.
The proposed tariffs on video game equipment and associated goods could affect people of all ages throughout the nation, we advocate for the government to engage in an open dialogue with industry representatives to prevent potential damage to everyday citizens and a thriving sector of American entertainment.
Digital software products are usually exempt from tariffs, but physical items such as game discs and gaming consoles (like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, computer graphics cards, and future Nintendo Switch 2) might be subject to them. The exact effect on prices for gamers isn’t clear yet.
The tariffs are scheduled to being at 12:01 ET on February 4.
