Unfortunately, we must share some disappointing updates regarding the upcoming Need for Speed game. Development seems to be encountering some unexpected delays, similar to a temporary halt on the journey.
The team from Need for Speed at Criterion is now devoting their attention entirely to the upcoming Battlefield 6. This announcement was made by Vince Zampella, who is in charge of the game, as reported by Eurogamer.
In the spirit of listening to our valued Need for Speed community, Criterion’s Speed Team is now collaborating with Battlefield colleagues. Our goal has been to incorporate their feedback into creating content for Unbound, while also enhancing our understanding of what our players seek from a Need for Speed experience. With this newfound insight, we aim to reinvigorate the franchise by offering fresh and captivating gameplay styles.
As EA, the parent company of NFS creators Criterion, also owns Battlefield, the development team is currently prioritizing their efforts towards creating the next Battlefield game – an essential addition to the series that was once a major force in the gaming industry.
Although this brief diversion momentarily pauses the progress of Need for Speed Unbound’s content and potentially a subsequent game, the urgent effort to resurrect their signature shooter title seems a valid justification for redirecting focus entirely at present.
Additionally, it’s fortunate that Zampella hints at the return of our beloved racing series in the future, and we can only hope this happens swiftly following the expected triumph of Battlefield 6.
Why Battlefield 6’s Success Is EA’s Need of the Hour
Clearly, Electronic Arts (EA) is making it clear they’re committed to rejuvenating the Battlefield series following the rocky debut of Battlefield 2042, which faced numerous problems upon release, leading to a growing sense of skepticism among players.
In order to rebuild the confidence of its players, Battlefield 6 is a project that carries immense responsibility. To ensure it’s the best it can be, not one but four studios under EA, including Criterion, are diligently working on designing and perfecting the game.
Besides employing a large team of developers, the studio is now focusing on gathering extensive input from fans, intending to incorporate this feedback into their work with the aim of delivering an exceptional return, potentially one of the most successful comebacks in history.
This endeavor now encompasses the newly initiated Battlefield Labs, a testing program for the public, where you can find further details by clicking here.
