If you find yourself similar to me upon entering Hyper Light Breaker, the Skill Tree could seem a bit unexpected and perplexing at first.
Between the levels, there are spaces, and the branches extending from these levels seem somewhat unclear and not overly useful at first glance.
In other words, even though it may seem chaotic at first glance, there is a logical approach to mastering this game. If you learn how to navigate the Skill Tree effectively, it can provide you with lasting advancements in your gameplay.
This tutorial will walk you through advancing along the Skill Tree, gaining access to fresh items, and outlining the functions of each item you can acquire.
This revised version maintains the original meaning while providing a more natural and easy-to-read language style.
Unlocking Nodes
Speaking with Pherus Bit, positioned directly before Spawn, will reveal various items that are initially unavailable due to them being unlocked upon obtaining the Golden Rations.
You can acquire these supplies through two primary methods: either by restarting the world, redeeming all your accumulated levels and some earned currency, or by exploring underground labs hidden within the overgrown areas.
In each seed, I’ve rarely encountered more than four lab appearances, and there’s only one available per lab. Therefore, it’s wise to perform well before restarting the world.
Once you’ve obtained your Golden Rations, feel free to approach Pherus Bit, navigate to the Skill Tree section, and select any sparkling gemstone of your preference, provided you’ve reached the required tier.
As a devoted enthusiast, I’d like to point out an essential aspect: You can utilize a node only when all the preceding ones have been unlocked. Interestingly, the initial few nodes require two slots, while subsequent nodes consume just one.
As a player, I’ve come to realize that these slots play a crucial role in determining how many skills I can actively utilize at once. It might happen that even though I’ve unlocked a skill, if I don’t have the necessary slots, it won’t be active for me. However, the good news is, I won’t need to spend on it the next time around when I do have the required slots available.
Unlocking Tiers
Each level on the Skill Tree has up to five stages, and within these levels, there are spaces that can be opened to add more skills. However, it is not compulsory to open these spaces in order to progress to the next level.
As an enthusiast, I’ve discovered that these tiers operate differently from regular Golden Rations; instead, they accept Cores. It turns out that locating these Cores is far easier, particularly when venturing into overgrown areas or discovering hidden Stashes, without needing to meet any specific prerequisites.
To obtain the next tier, you must first unlock the previous one. This means that if there’s something appealing on Tier 5, you won’t be able to access it until you’ve acquired Tiers 2, 3, and 4 first.
If you run short on Golden Rations, it’s still possible for you to acquire the next tier as long as you have enough of the alternative currency. In simpler terms, there’s no requirement to unlock prior levels, so you can move forward even with limited resources.
Skill Explanations
Every skill offers a distinct benefit that gets applied during each playthrough, regardless of the character or weapon in use, provided they are currently enabled, for players to upgrade.
For those less acquainted with the game mechanics, some explanations might seem vague. To provide a clearer understanding, let’s explore each distinct skill presented.
Tier 1
Name | Effect | Slot Cost |
---|---|---|
Board Energy | Increases your stamina for hoverboarding or gliding by 0.5 seconds. These two use seperate stamina bars, with gliding typically exhausting more stamina, and this affects them equally. | 1 Slot, for all 5 nodes. |
XL Syringe | Makes your Medkit heal 10% more, typically bringing it up to 82 HP total. Stacks with any Holobytes that affect your healing. | 2 Slots. |
Tier 2
Name | Effect | Slot Cost |
---|---|---|
Reflector | Perfect Parries reflect projectiles, with additional damage dealt the more of these you have equipped. Note that this only works if you’re able to parry a moving projectile within a very precise window, and anything late or early won’t work. | 2 Slots for the first, and 1 Slot for every subsequent node. |
Refined Blades | Gives your default melee weapon a random modifier, such as dealing more damage with your Dash Attack. | 2 Slots. |
Vault Slots | Gives you two more slots of inventory space, for holding Armor, Weapons, Amps, etc. | 1 Slot for the first three, and 2 Slots for the final one. |
Tier 3
Name | Effect | Slot Cost |
---|---|---|
Skeleton Key | Gives a free key whenever you remake the world, which can be used to open certain doors in the Overgrowth. | 1 Slot. |
Flash Step | Gives 5% additive damage to your Flash Step, which comes out when you dash and attack at the same time. | 1 Slot for the first two, then 2 Slots for the final. |
Tier 4
Name | Effect | Slot Cost |
---|---|---|
Medkit Capacity | Raises your maximum Medkits to two in total, which automatically refills back to two whenever you start a run. | 3 Slots. |
Synergy | Deal 10% additive damage for each piece of equipment you have that deals the same status effect, so if you’ve got Burn on your blade, rail, and amp, that’s 30% extra damage. Additionally, each Synergy equipped raises the damage gained, so with three synergies, that combination would deal 90% extra damage. | 1 Slot for all three. |
Tier 5
Name | Effect | Slot Cost |
---|---|---|
Auto-Repair Program | Gives a 5% chance to upgrade the rarity of any equipment you find, so if it was a tier 2, it would become a tier 3. Each additional node equipped adds 5% to this chance, for a total of 20%. | 1 Slot for all four. |
Locked | Does nothing, and you can’t unlock it, it’s just there for some reason. | 🙁 |
