In the world of “One Piece,” God’s Knights are high-ranking guards within Mary Geoise who hold power over World Nobles. However, they fall below the Five Elders in the hierarchy. Unlike the Five Elders or the World Nobles, these characters were only introduced to the audience relatively recently, with no mention of them until well past 1000 episodes/chapters.
It’s probably because they belong to Mary Geoise, a place that’s off-limits to most characters in the series who aren’t royal. However, as the Final Saga unfolds, we’re learning more about them bit by bit. Here’s a rundown of what we know so far about this mysterious group.
5. They Are (or Were) Commanded by Figarland Garling
The Newest Elder Is First Identified As Their Supreme Commander
In the latest group of five powerful beings known as the Elders, Figarland Garling has taken over the role previously held by Jaygarcia Saturn, who was recently put to death. He is now the Warrior God responsible for Science and Defense. For a considerable amount of time prior to this, he had been a member of the divine team known as God’s Knights. This was during the period leading up to the God Valley Incident, which occurred 38 years before the present storyline in the series. He was widely recognized as a top performer at God Valley and even took part in the brutal Native Hunting Competition, where the inhabitants of a specific region were hunted for entertainment. In an act of both cruelty and overconfidence, Garling triggered a penalty by killing before the game’s timer had even started, resulting in him losing 10,000 points.
Currently, I find myself demonstrating the execution of Saint Donquixote Mjosgard, a World Noble who hindered the rescue of Shirahoshi, the royal princess of Ryugu Kingdom, and allowed pirates, particularly Leo and Sai from the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, to retaliate against Saint Charlos for the attempted kidnapping. This scene is particularly intriguing because it illustrates that even World Nobles, who are typically above the law, face consequences when they overstep their boundaries. As for Garling’s involvement with God’s Knights since taking Saturn’s place among the Five Elders, I can only speculate as the details remain unclear to me.
4. They Are Related to Shanks
At Least Two Relatives Are Members
The Figarland Family first appeared in the non-canonical movie titled “One Piece Film: Red.” In this film, it was suggested that the main antagonist, Uta, might be from the Figarland lineage. However, this appears to be false, as Uta’s biological parents are unknown due to her adoption. It seems that someone with Figarland blood could be Uta’s adoptive father, Shanks, who took care of her alongside his pirate crew, the Red Hair Pirates. Interestingly, Shanks was also adopted, as he was found in a treasure chest at God Valley when he was only one year old and taken in by the Roger Pirates.
In the latest chapter penned, Figarland Shamrock unequivocally referred to Shanks as his “younger twin brother.” Earlier in the narrative, Shamrock was depicted as a cloaked figure conferring with the Five Elders due to his status, expressing his desire to talk about a specific pirate. The absence of facial scarring on Shanks initially went unaddressed, leading some to assume it could be the Emperor himself. Moreover, in both English and Japanese versions of Shamrock’s debut, Shanks and Shamrock were voiced by the same actors. Notably, this was the only character for whom these actors provided voices, hinting that they were intended to deceive viewers into believing Shamrock was actually Shanks.
Despite not yet having made his official appearance, there were whispers that Shanks might have a twin, given the similarities between him and Shamrock in features such as eye color, beard style, and hair tone. Moreover, while Shamrock wears different clothing, he also lacks scars and seems to possess both arms – aspects that are unusual for someone of his rank as an Emperor, a title reserved for pirates deemed major threats by the World Government. Interestingly, it’s rumored that Shanks may not have the best rapport with his known kin, and Shamrock himself has reportedly visited Mary Geoise once before, but prefers life as a pirate instead.
3. Outsiders Are Allowed To Join
Apparently Non-Nobles Can Join Too
Shamrock and Gunko, part of God’s Knights, are attempting (but unsuccessfully) to coerce Loki into joining their ranks, resorting to violent measures such as injuring him and killing one of his companions. This suggests that individuals not born into the World Nobles class can still become members of this organization. Given the weak-willed nature of most World Nobles, it’s understandable that a group tasked with their protection might need reinforcements from outside sources to operate effectively.
It isn’t clear what benefits, if any, a newcomer can expect when they join, or how one can prove themselves worthy enough to join this group in the first place. Even though Loki is royalty, he’s treated like a commoner, receiving “divine status” which suggests there might be some advantages for joining the organization. Loki probably got that rank because of his remarkable strength and his deep-seated animosity towards Elbaf’s other giants, especially the most powerful ones who tried to hold him back at one point.
York, the satellite character currently serving under Garling, managed to secure his position by betraying his creator, Dr. Vegapunk, and divulging all the secrets he had amassed. This act appeared to be a successful strategy for attaining the status of a World Noble. It seems that a comparable act might be expected from someone aspiring to join God’s Knights. Gunko’s character, marked by aggression rather than arrogance, suggests a background that is not of noble origin, although this has yet to be explicitly confirmed.
2. They Want To Control The Giants of Elbaf
And They’ll Take Their Children To Do It!
Elbaf is famed for its colossal warriors often engaged in conflict. This image is sustained by crews like the Giant Warrior Pirates, who hail from this island and are renowned for their daring feats. Pirates belonging to these crews, such as Dorry and Broggy, consider death in battle an honor, participating in valorous battles with one another. However, it’s worth noting that recent changes initiated by the late King Harald have prompted a shift in this mindset among Elbaf’s giants. King Harald, who detested war deeply, even discarded his horns – symbols of his giant lineage – as they served as reminders of his warrior ancestors.
It appears that following Loki’s refusal, Gunko and Shamrock seem to be contemplating a strategy to bring Elbaf’s giants under the control of the World Government. In the past, orphaned giants have been assimilated into the World Government due to the human trafficking activities of Mother Carmel, who cared for various types of orphans, including young Charlotte Linlin. Notably, Vice Admiral John Giant, the first giant character introduced in the series and the first ever giant marine, was one such orphan from Elbaf. Furthermore, within the Marines, there is a specialized team called the Giant Squad, composed solely of giants, although their origins remain unclear as other giant civilizations have been confirmed to exist.
It’s not clear what unique advantages the giants of Elbaf offer over those already allied with the Marines. Perhaps their warrior reputation makes them an attractive option for control. Alternatively, it might just be that they are a nation of giants, a powerful species no matter where they originate from. There’s talk about manipulating the giant children to gain control, so any strategy to harness their power will probably involve this approach.
1. They Will Fight The Revolutionary Army
A Conflict Between The Two Groups Has Been Teased
The Revolutionary Army, headed by Monkey D. Dragon (Luffy’s father), operates as a rebellious group opposed to the current government. They harbor significant resentment towards the World Nobles, likely due to the advantages they enjoy from an entrenched system of inequality. In a daring operation, Sabo and four commanders infiltrated Mary Geoise with the intention of rescuing Bartholomew Kuma and liberating slaves as they went. Despite this, they chose not to engage directly with the God’s Knights during their mission. Dragon is aware that the events at Mary Geoise will not go unnoticed and anticipates that the God’s Knights will retaliate against the Revolutionary Army.
It’s unclear how many God’s Knights there truly are, but based on the shadows seen during discussions about them, it seems they have at least nine members. They’re generally thought of as being extremely potent, and we’ll likely get a better understanding of their full power when they engage in a real confrontation with the Revolutionary Army.
