Currently, it seems as if every significant franchise is venturing into the world of video games, with titles like Fortnite and Call of Duty borrowing various intellectual properties. Now, Destiny 2 is following suit by introducing Star Wars-themed cosmetics for its players. These include armor, emotes, and assorted items to enhance their Destiny 2 gameplay experience. However, this crossover is merely a beginning, and it’s hoped that it will set the stage for an immersive MMO Star Wars adventure for gamers.
The Star Wars universe has previously ventured into Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games with titles such as Star Wars: Galaxies and Star Wars: The Old Republic, offering space exploration to gamers far and wide. Yet, it hasn’t dived into a Destiny-style experience – something that should be explored further. The Star Wars cosmetics in Destiny 2 offer a glimpse of the enormous potential an MMO-adjacent game could have for the Disney franchise. Here’s hoping a studio will fully embrace this idea and create a captivating, immersive experience.
Destiny x Star Wars Should Just Be the Start of What is to Come
Star Wars Has Had Some MMOs in the Past
For decades, the Star Wars universe has been brought to life in various video game formats, offering a diverse range of gaming experiences. From playing with LEGO bricks in Star Wars-themed worlds, to engaging in galactic combat in Battlefront, embarking on thrilling journeys in The Force Unleashed and Jedi: Fallen Order, and piloting starfighters in Jedi Starfighter and Squadrons, players have been immersed in a myriad of adventures. In the realm of MMOs, they’ve delved into countless stories within The Old Republic and Galaxies.
Star Wars has had some significant multiplayer role-playing game (MMO) ventures, but none have truly matched the popularity of games like Destiny. Star Wars Galaxies ceased operation in 2011, with only private emulators keeping it alive unofficially. Conversely, Star Wars: The Old Republic appears to be a hit, as it has received numerous content updates since its debut. Nevertheless, it is more traditional MMO fare compared to a live-service shooter, and given the success of games such as Star Wars Battlefront, the franchise seems tailor-made for first-person shooters.
A Destiny-like Star Wars MMO Seems Like an Easy Win
In essence, Destiny 2 has given us a glimpse into what a Star Wars first-person shooter MMO might be like, so here’s hoping a studio fully embraces this concept in the near future. Imagine stepping into the boots of a common soldier from one of the numerous factions, battling it out across various planets, and shaping the galaxy’s destiny. The setting could span any of the trilogies, delve into events bridging some films, or even introduce a brand-new timeline. As the franchise evolves, so too can its narratives and worlds, leading to an extraordinary and continuously expanding journey.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but acknowledge the reasons behind Bungie’s triumph with “Destiny 2”. Its core gameplay mechanics simply hit the spot for many gamers, making it incredibly satisfying. Transposing that gameplay into the iconic Star Wars galaxy feels like an unbeatable strategy. Naturally, a compelling narrative is crucial, the environments need to be engaging and immersive, and there should be a wealth of content to conquer. If a game development studio manages to strike all these points perfectly, then players might just find themselves on the edge of their seats with anticipation.
On the horizon, there’s no scarcity of Star Wars video games, but none appear to be massive multiplayer online (MMO) games similar to Destiny. Yet, if the new Destiny 2 x Star Wars crossover attracts a large number of players, it might encourage someone to develop an MMO-style game. Although we appreciate the cross-over content, nothing quite matches the experience of a standalone game, and now seems like the ideal moment for its release.
