Initially conceived as a straightforward caravan game, Scaravan 66 morphed into an electrifying, lively universe influenced by psychobilly genre. In contrast to typical racing games, Scaravan 66 emphasizes extensive world-building, eerie aesthetics, and a distinctive player experience. The core gameplay of Scaravan 66 centers around a sequence of confrontations, each featuring multiple waves of adversaries. This format grants players the freedom, timing, and decision-making autonomy to tackle each scenario as they see fit. Naturally, game development is marked by its hurdles, and Scaravan has its share, from initial design phases to the complexities of blending rapid combat with roguelike mechanics.
In an interview with Game Rant, co-founders Andy Wood and Al Bellemare from Lithic Entertainment shared their journey, from idea generation to finding the right mix of distinctive features, leading up to the launch of “Scaravan 66” next year in 2025. This tale showcases creativity and the genesis of a game designed to offer an exceptional gaming experience upon its release.
From Cute Fantasy Caravans to Hellhounds and High-Speed Carnage
Iteration, Execution, and Scaling
Initially, when the developers began designing the game, their concept revolved around a low-tech fantasy setting with a literal horse and carriage as its core. However, they soon understood that the intended intense action required more dynamic gameplay. Introducing fast-paced, high-octane combat seemed to align perfectly with the immersive experience they wanted for players. Consequently, transitioning from the original concept to the fast-paced, hellish setting of “Scaravan 66” proved to be a game-changing decision. The developers elaborated on this shift in direction.
One day, while sifting through ancient game design sketches from past game jams, we stumbled upon some faint drawings depicting a game based on psychobilly music, featuring a storyline where the main character rages in a car and flees from hounds of hell. This is when we had our moment of clarity and understood that this kind of setting aligns much better with the desired pace for our target audience.
By embracing the psychobilly style, they found an innovative path for the game, enabling them to delve into more engaging gameplay for enhanced player experiences. The transition from charming caravan motifs to a wild journey along Route 66 significantly influenced the fundamental mechanics, visual aspects, and character development. The gritty, post-apocalyptic ambiance of psychobilly served as an ideal canvas for the developers to craft a chilling horror game centered around vehicular combat, ultimately creating a masterpiece in this genre.
The development of any project isn’t free from obstacles, and as the developers shared, the toughest part was selecting the right features while staying within the set deadline. With such a grand vision in mind, making the game playable, enjoyable, and polished took considerable time. Adding to the challenge was the intricacy of vehicle chain physics. Balancing these requirements – the deadline, feature set, and chain physics – required significant effort. However, after some adjustments, the developers successfully created their desired experience without sacrificing quality.
Indeed, certain content is omitted intentionally, and there were aspects that didn’t make it past the editing process. The developers elaborated on this point.
Initially, we had plans to make some of the Road Reapers (characters in the game) romancable. Their designs reflect this intention, so if any of them appear flirty, that’s why. However, we ultimately decided not to include this feature. We welcome players to imagine their own scenarios and relationships within the game.
The Core of the Player Experience: The Birth of Scaravan 66
In the thrilling mix of high-stakes peril and strategic challenge characteristic of roguelike games, Scaravan 66 is poised to deliver heart-pounding excitement. Unlike typical car combat games, this one offers a distinctive world teeming with character, making it more than just another title in the genre.
At the heart of the game, Scaravan 66 captivates players, drawing them in and making it hard for them to leave. This could be due to the intricate mechanics, enticing challenges, immersive world-building, or characters that seem real. The developers have found immense satisfaction during their adventure on Route 66, with the most fulfilling aspect being the realization of their creative vision.
