Summary
- Characters in Demon Slayer may seem stagnant, but they actually develop through hardships.
- The series tackles character growth uniquely, often revealing hidden complexities.
- Tanjiro and Zenitsu show significant growth and face internal battles, despite their comedic personas.
I’ve been witnessing the immense popularity of the series known as “Demon Slayer”. It’s captivating audience worldwide with its stunning animation and unyielding characters. However, it’s interesting to note that despite its darker elements, the overall optimism and comical moments in the show create a veil, softening the brutal nature of its scenes, making the gruesome aspects seem less intense.
Although some characters might appear consistent in their positive traits across the series, it’s essential to note that they aren’t static. Instead, these characters undergo growth as they navigate through various challenges. This growth is often depicted at specific points throughout the storyline. So, how does this series portray character development?
Although some characters appear unchanging in their positive traits across the series, they actually grow and change over time, with their growth being shown at different stages of the story.
How Have the Characters Developed Over Time?
Character Development Can Take Many Shapes and Forms
Demon Slayer boasts a rich cast of peculiar characters and histories, some of which may make you tear up at their sorrowful fates. The development of these characters often involves change and evolution over the course of the series, as they confront numerous challenges that challenge their moral compasses. Essentially, how will these characters evolve and conquer the hardships they encounter? As the story unfolds, the characters are compelled to grapple with harrowing tragedies, offering a glimpse into the lives of demons before Kibutsuji Muzan’s transformation.
- Are there motivations that make the characters grow?
- Are there past experiences that relate to their motivations, giving them a reason for their actions?
- If obstacles arise, will it force the characters to grow or reveal a cowardly nature?
The show distinctly explores character evolution as many of the characters maintain consistent identities throughout. Yet, when confronted with choices that challenge their ethical standards, they are reminded that the evil entities they battle were once humans, manipulated by Muzan and his deceitful strategies.
Is a Personality Change Necessary to See Character Development?
How a Character Handles Hardship Is Reflected in Their Personality

In essence, Kamado Tanjiro is predominantly a character known for his good-natured disposition throughout the series. He embodies kindness, possesses a soft-hearted demeanor, and shows empathy towards numerous characters he encounters. Indeed, Tanjiro proved to be the ideal hero, tirelessly advocating justice and rescuing those who had suffered injustice.
Despite enduring unimaginable hardship when his family was slain by Muzan and his sister Nezuko was transformed into a demon, Tanjiro consistently maintained his empathetic disposition. As the story unfolds, Tanjiro encounters various peculiar individuals who have joined the Demon Slayer Corps for their own personal reasons. Although Tanjiro acknowledges the pain and devastation demons inflict upon humanity, he continues to feel compassion towards these creatures. This is evident as Tanjiro often shows empathy for their tragic lives and tries to understand why they followed Muzan’s path.
The way Tanjiro tackles these demons is distinctive, reflecting his strong character. As previously stated, Tanjiro’s personality is clear-cut, always standing for what is right, correcting others when they err, and reprimanding them for their actions. This trait might primarily stem from Tanjiro taking on the role of family head after his father’s demise, which compelled him to assume responsibility for his younger siblings.
Initially, Tanjiro is a kind-hearted individual who cares for others and strives for justice. His compassionate nature might lead some to underestimate his personal growth throughout his journey as a Demon Slayer. However, overcoming challenges and conflicts is crucial in shaping a character’s development.
Tanjiro has already experienced a life-altering struggle that sets him on the path as a Demon Slayer, driven by his desire to transform his sister back into a human and avenge his family’s death at the hands of Kibutsuji Muzan, ending his tyranny. Despite retaining his positive and empathetic nature, dealing with the loss of his entire family was incredibly difficult. Overcoming this hardship showcases Tanjiro’s character development and his determination to save his sister. Although Tanjiro feels compassion for the demons he has eliminated, it leads him to struggle internally. However, he is unwavering in his resolve to eliminate them, as they pose a threat to humanity and will continue to take innocent lives if left unchecked.
Evil demon…!! I will cut your head off right here!!
Demon Slayer employs humor and an overall upbeat tone to mask the emotional turmoil of its characters, causing us to overlook or miss the suffering they endure until confronted with a difficult scenario. Consequently, their hidden pain and sorrow are only exposed during a fight against the demon who killed their loved ones, as exemplified by Kocho Shinobu and Agatsuma Zenitsu.
Absolutely, Kamado Tanjiro isn’t the only character who’s faced adversity, maintained a strong front for others, and persistently driven himself towards his objective. Unlike Tanjiro, Zenitsu initially lacked ambition and was compelled to join the Corps, but during the Infinity Castle arc, Zenitsu has displayed growth that hasn’t been evident in earlier series arcs.
Zenitsu is often depicted as a comedian and coward in the trio, avoiding confrontations with terrifying demons and putting himself in dangerous situations. While his fearfulness brought on plenty of laughter, Zenitsu harbored doubts about his own capabilities because he hadn’t mastered other techniques from the Thunder Breathing style yet. However, Zenitsu’s character development becomes particularly evident during the Infinity Castle arc when he faces Kaigaku. He no longer acts weak or cowardly as before. Although Zenitsu didn’t undergo significant personality changes in the series finale, this battle revealed a more intricate side of him, highlighting his growth and concern for others.
I wasn’t overly fond of myself, as I felt compelled to perform every task flawlessly. However, fear often took hold, causing me to flee and weep. I yearn for change, I want to become a more balanced individual.
Occasionally, the character progression in this show might appear subtly, to the extent that viewers might not immediately notice it. But upon closer analysis, Demon Slayer exhibits a positive outlook on the series’ happenings, given that most characters seem to remain mostly consistent. However, it eventually becomes clear that these characters are grappling with inner struggles which they need to conquer, and their humorous antics serve as a cover for their true emotions.
Demon Slayer is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
