How WWE 2K25 Aims to Capitalize on Wrestling’s Popularity and The Bloodline Storyline

The WWE 2K franchise was at a low point nearly six years ago.

In contrast to previous installments, which were developed by Yuke’s, WWE 2K20, the initial game in the series under Visual Concepts’ leadership, fell short of expectations significantly. Unfortunately, their debut attempt as the main studio didn’t meet the mark.

After a break of one year, the series resumed with WWE 2K22, marking a return that mirrors typical WWE plotlines. Given that Cody Rhodes was the centerpiece of WWE 2K24, it’s logical to expect that WWE 2K25 will narrate the tale of Roman Reigns and The Bloodline dynasty.

During a recent hands-on event, I had a chance to chat with Creative Director Lynell Jinks.

WWE 2K25’s Development Has Been An Exciting Time

It’s clear from what I mentioned before that the WWE brand is extremely well-liked. Just look at the recent Royal Rumble in Indianapolis, Indiana’s Lucas Oil Stadium – an astounding 70,000 people attended, which is almost unbelievable for an event outside of WrestleMania. The level of anticipation and enthusiasm surrounding WWE right now is reminiscent of the Attitude era, and Jinks acknowledges this surge in popularity.

He mentioned that for him, the project has been quite thrilling, don’t you agree? This is because, as a developer, you’re always drawn towards working on an Intellectual Property (IP) that enjoys widespread popularity and has a dedicated following.

He also mentioned the mistakes made in WWE 2K20, expressing a belief that the fanbase had been alienated. However, there has been a warm reception for the series’ return, as it seeks to take advantage of wrestling’s increasing popularity, particularly this year with its Showcase theme focused on Roman Reigns and The Bloodline.

WWE’s Focus on The Bloodline Has Been A Blessing and a Curse

With the WWE concentrating on extended storylines through The Bloodline and an increased number of Anoa’i family members joining the WWE roster, one might assume this would benefit Visual Concepts and WWE 2K25. It certainly does, but it could also become a challenge, according to Jinks.

It’s truly exciting to witness talent like Jacob Fatu join the WWE roster, but creating a video game isn’t something that happens overnight. This means we often need to rush to incorporate newcomers like him before the game hits the shelves.

He said, “We’ve got a lot on our plate, but we aim to manage our time effectively so that we can provide adequate support for the incoming wrestlers.
