In the cinema world, there’s much excitement for the release of “Scream 7” in 2026. One of its stars has recently given us a sneak peek about Ghostface in the upcoming film. Known for its success as one of the most prominent slasher movies ever made, it’s no surprise that another chapter is on its way next year!
There’s a great deal of anticipation, particularly due to the fact that some familiar faces from the past are rejoining the cast, such as Neve Campbell, Scott Foley, and Matthew Lillard, who were part of the original Ghostface group in the series. Recently, an actor from the Scream 7 production has provided an update on the main villain in the franchise – Ghostface – and what they revealed is bound to leave fans thrilled.
In his recent interview at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Heart Eyes’, Mason Gooding, who plays Chad Meeks-Martin in the ‘Scream’ series, discussed ‘Scream 7’. Gooding initially appeared in the successful slasher franchise with ‘Scream 5’ (2022), and continued his role into ‘Scream 6’ (2023) alongside Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown). For the upcoming movie, Gooding hinted that Ghostface is “more brutal than ever”. As reported by Variety, he said, “I think that Ghostface is absolutely the most brutal he’s been. I don’t want to reveal too much, but there are some things done to the human body that I believe Kevin Williamson and team are pushing boundaries with.” He further mentioned that ‘Scream 7’ will be “disturbing yet enjoyable”.
In his own words, Gooding revealed the aspect of the project he found most exhilarating. He openly expressed his joy about collaborating with the original cast member, Campbell. Despite their shared roles in Scream 5, Gooding felt that there was limited chance to work with Campbell in the previous film. However, this time around, it appeared they were working more closely together. As he put it, “I get to work with Neve [in ‘Scream 7’], who I didn’t get a great opportunity to interact with on a personal level [on ‘Scream 5’].” Gooding continued, “So in this case, even just being near her feels like I’m tapping into that history, and it makes me feel better for it.” Unfortunately, Campbell decided not to participate in Scream 6 due to a payment disagreement. However, she announced her return to the franchise in March 2024.
It’s uncertain whether Gooding’s comment about Ghostface becoming more violent in Scream 7 connects to Lillard and Foley’s return, given they both played Ghostface in Scream and Scream 3, with Lillard as Stu Macher and Foley as Roman Bridger. In the first film, after discovering he was one of the killers, Stu (Lillard) was hit by a TV by Sidney (Campbell). Since electrocuted, it was presumed he died and didn’t appear in later sequels. Making Ghostface particularly violent could be explained by reintroducing actors who played the masked killer. With Campbell’s return as Sidney, they might have a lethal reunion. This could be thrilling, especially since it’s been a while since we last saw them together in the original Scream movie. If Stu is indeed deceased, he may appear through flashbacks. I’d rather see him alive and interact with Campbell again, continuing their life-and-death struggle from the first film. Unlike Stu, Roman’s death has been confirmed, so we might only see him in flashbacks.
Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026.
