Summary
- Some NPCs in Elden Ring have tragic storylines that can end in death, mirroring the broken world they inhabit.
- Characters like Diallos and Corhyn meet unfortunate ends, emphasizing the bleakness of the game’s narrative.
- Each character’s fate is intertwined with the protagonist’s quest, showcasing the desolation and despair of the Lands Between.
Despite its grand and elaborate open environment, Elden Ring presents a strikingly grim gameplay experience. The narrative unfolds post-collapse of the Golden Order, in the wake of civilization’s demise and the weakening of the deities themselves. The player’s mission to mend the fractured Elden Ring serves as a powerful symbol for the devastated and fragmented condition of the Lands Between.
Amidst this barren landscape, the Tarnished will run into various Non-Player Characters (NPCs), each striving to live and thrive in their unique ways. Similar to the Tarnished’s journey, these characters often reflect the shattered world they reside in, and as a result, most of their individual narratives do not end on a positive note. Here are some significant NPCs whose stories might culminate in death, without the protagonist being there to witness it.
9. Diallos
The Hope of Jarburg
- First Location: Roundtable Hold
In Elden Ring, Diallos is a character who struggles with his lack of martial prowess despite being a noble from the warlike House Hoslow. Living in the harsh world of the Lands Between, he finds himself lacking the combat skills to survive. Instead of accepting this unfortunate reality, Diallos continues to strive and try to prove himself worthy. His journey leads him into the grasp of the sinister inhabitants of the Volcano Manor, but eventually, he manages to break away from these unsettling blasphemers.
In the finale of his storyline, Diallos settles down in the concealed sanctuary of Jarburg, a place where the game’s Living Jars reside. He finds tranquility here, assuming the role of their protector. However, this serenity is abruptly ended. While the Tarnished embarks on their separate journey, a poacher assaults Jarburg, leading to Diallos’ unfortunate demise during his valiant effort to shield them. The remaining jar swears to transform into a warrior, aiming to preserve and honor Diallos’ intricate and sorrowful legacy.
8. Corhyn
A Crisis Of Faith
- First Location: Roundtable Hold
As an Elden Ring gamer, one character I can’t overlook is the guy you’ll encounter early on at the Roundtable Hold. He’s my go-to merchant for Incantations, which are a lifesaver for those of us who focus on Faith builds. This fellow is indispensable!
In due course, Corhyn intends to embark on a journey to find Goldmask, an elusive philosopher who upholds the Golden Order. Accompanying these two spiritual leaders on their pilgrimage will allow the player to assist Corhyn in unearthing astonishing facts about Radagon and Marika, key figures in the realm’s faith. This startling disclosure causes Corhyn profound distress, but his support can pave the way for a fresh era within the Lands Between.
7. Thops
A Tragic Bluntstone
- First Location: Church of Irith
He’s a passionate, yet somewhat inexperienced Glintstone Sorcerer whose zeal for his art exceeds his proficiency. This unassuming student unfortunately found himself absent from the academy of Raya Lucaria during the time it was fortified and isolated.
For a modest contribution, Thops offers guidance to help players gain access to Raya Lucaria Academy using an Academy Glintstone Key. In return, players can locate a second key within the academy premises and give it back to Thops, granting him entry once more to these revered halls of arcane wisdom. Regrettably, Thops’ eagerness to demonstrate his worth leads him to overexert himself, resulting in him being found on the academy grounds, appearing to have worked himself to exhaustion.
6. D
Hunter Of The Dead
- First Location: Stormhill, Limgrave
D stands out with his intense pursuit of the undead and unique armor collection. Initially found tracking a menacing Tibia Mariner in the field, if you defeat this skeletal enemy, D will introduce you to the Beast Clergyman. The latter will then reward your successes against Those Who Live Beyond Death.
(Note: This version maintains the original’s structure while using simpler and more conversational language.)
As a gamer, I found myself in quite an intriguing situation at the Roundtable Hold. It seemed like D’s schemes were the talk of the town, but little did he know that others had their own plans brewing. After getting to know the enigmatic Fia, Deathbed Companion, I discovered she wasn’t just another face in the crowd. One day, she entrusted me with a mysterious dagger. This blade was no ordinary weapon; it spelled doom for D, as he met his end at Fia’s hands shortly after receiving the dagger.
5. Boc
A Troubled Tailor
- First Location: Limgrave
In a peculiar turn of events, Boc is famously recognized due to the unusual scenario in which the Tarnished initially meets him: an unidentified attacker has transformed him into a tree. After the player removes this enchantment and assists Boc in recovering his sewing kit from the tribe that rejected him, the grateful creature offers to serve as their tailor, altering their clothing accordingly.
In time, Boc may struggle with discomfort over his plain appearance, and the player has several methods to assist him in improving his self-perception. The most effective approach is using a unique Prattling Pate item to praise him, which helps alleviate his distress and allows him to continue serving the player. Alternatively, players can help Boc achieve his goal of transformation by giving him a Larval Tear, an item that Queen Rennala employs to rejuvenate her followers. However, this choice leads to Boc’s demise; if the delusional queen endeavors to transform him into a human form, the process will fail, and he will meet his end.
4. Rogier
A Doomed Scholar
- First Location: Stormveil Castle
Rogier, a kind and intellectually curious swordswoman, is initially found hiding from the imposing knights patrolling Stormveil Castle. His insatiable thirst for knowledge often lands him in trouble. Upon uncovering a colossal deathblight growth beneath Stormveil, Rogier contracts an insidious illness that leaves him unable to walk.
1) It’s possible for individuals to team up to assist Rogier in his academic pursuits, exploring areas where he can no longer tread. The research of the spellblade sheds light on various aspects of the lore concerning the expansion of undead entities across the Lands Between and the tragic events that led to Godwyn the Golden’s demise. Adhering to Rogier’s guidance will eventually lead players to encounter Ranni the Witch, who remains a mysterious figure. Unfortunately, Rogier may succumb to the Deathblight before he can witness Ranni’s plans come to fruition.
3. Irina
An Innocent Girl
- First Location: Bridge of Sacrifice
A young woman who is blind, met by the Tarnished soon after their arrival in the Weeping Peninsula, turns out to be the daughter of Edgar, the lord of Castle Morne. Tragically, she was kept apart from her father due to a violent rebellion that resulted in the gruesome slaughter of many castle residents at the hands of the monstrous Misbegotten.
Irina implores her father for assistance, but when the player locates him, he’s so committed to freeing Castle Morne from its hostile control that he can’t help his daughter. By the time players assist him in defeating the Leonine Misbegotten who has taken the castle’s legendary grafted blade, it will be too late, and Irina will already have been killed. This sad event pushes Edgar over the edge with grief and revenge-driven anger, and eventually, he becomes a threat that needs to be neutralized.
2. Iji
A Noble Blacksmith
- First Location: Liurnia of the Lakes
The character is a blacksmith troll, whose imposing size contradicts his peaceful and intellectual personality. He acts as an advisor to Ranni the Witch, and those who follow her questline will have numerous encounters with him. His intellectual prowess assists players on numerous occasions during their adventure, yet it’s clear he knows far more than he reveals.
As Ranni approaches her final destination, Iji subtly takes steps to ensure her safety, such as confining Blaidd, her loyal half-wolf companion. If the player decides to free Blaidd, they’ll understand why Iji took extreme actions; when Ranni goes against the Golden Order, Blaidd becomes deranged and the player must put him down. Shortly afterward, Iji himself is killed by a group of Black Knife Assassins who have been sent for him.
1. Millicent
A Mysterious Crimson Maiden
- First Location: Church of the Plague
In ‘Elden Ring’, the protagonist’s journey involves a complex series of events leading them to encounter one of the game’s most renowned bosses. This young woman, who lost an arm, is afflicted with the Crimson Rot. If players manage to help her by working with the enigmatic figure Gowry, they can temporarily heal her. Once healed, Millicent embarks on a quest to uncover her past and confront Malenia, Blade of Miquella.
Following the defeat of the legendary semi-divine being, players are faced with a decision about Millicent’s future. As she confronts her sisters who originate from the goddess’ rotting bloom, Gowry encourages the player to betray Millicent and grow her own crimson bloom. However, those who refuse his dark scheme can opt to help her against her five siblings instead. After a tough, intense battle, Millicent refuses the fake remedy offered by the treacherous Gowry and decides to pass away peacefully from the plague, rather than let it grow and bloom within her.
