RUMOR: Sony Has A Big Fix Planned For Their Faltering Spider-Man Universe

Summary

  • Sony is considering featuring a new Marvel character after Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
  • Miles Morales may be introduced in future Spider-Man films after Holland’s Peter Parker.
  • Sony needs to carefully cast and tell the story of Miles to achieve the same success as Holland’s Spider-Man.

It appears that Sony, being the rights holder of Spider-Man, may introduce another Marvel character following Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker. While Holland’s Spider-Man has been incredibly popular, Sony’s other films have not fared as well.

In 1999, Sony obtained the rights to Spider-Man, prior to Marvel Studios being established. They then produced three Spider-Man films featuring Tobey Maguire (2002 – 2007) and two with Andrew Garfield (2012-2014). Sony and Marvel Studios have a unique deal that allows Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Sony is also building its own Spider-Man universe, which includes movies like Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Web. These films don’t belong to the MCU and have received varying reviews from critics and audiences. Given this, it’s not surprising that there are reports of Sony planning another Spider-Man film with a new character after Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.

In a recent Q&A, movie expert Alex Perez discussed the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and comics. When asked about the potential renaming of Disney Plus’ series “Young Avengers” to “Champions,” and whether it would include Miles Morales, Perez agreed that changing the title to “Champions” made sense due to a better fit, but he suggested it was unlikely for Miles to be included because there are rumors of him having his own projects. According to Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), Miles and Nova (Sam Alexander) won’t be part of the Champions team. This is because Miles may be part of a rebooted Sony Universe, which is expected to be established following “Secret Wars.

Miles Morales, a character from Marvel Comics, assumes the role of Spider-Man following Peter Parker. He debuted in Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011). Miles is a teenage Afro-Puerto Rican boy with an African-American father and an Afro-Puerto Rican mother, and he’s the second Spider-Man in the Ultimate Marvel. If Sony decides to include him in future films, they could introduce him alongside Tom Holland’s character. Previously, Holland has expressed a desire to incorporate Miles Morales into his Spider-Man universe and the MCU, stating, “If I were fortunate enough to somehow integrate Miles Morales into my Spider-Man universe and into the MCU, I would be thrilled to do for a young kid what [Robert] Downey [Jr.] did for me.” In the MCU, Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., served as a mentor and father figure to Spider-Man.

As a die-hard movie fan, I’d say introducing Miles Morales in a live-action adaptation could be a shrewd move for Sony Pictures, given his immense popularity among fans. However, they must tread carefully when it comes to casting and storytelling. Tom Holland, in my opinion, is one of the best parts of the Spider-Man films, as he seamlessly transforms into the beloved superhero persona that audiences adore. Initially, he was only slated for a trilogy, but the phenomenal success of Spider-Man: No Way Home led Marvel and Sony to extend his contract for Spider-Man 4. If Sony decides to bring Miles next, it’s uncertain whether they’ll collaborate with Marvel Studios again. I personally believe they should, as their joint projects have consistently excelled both critically and commercially.
