One intriguing creature found in Dungeons & Dragons is the Xorn, a peculiar being hailing from the Elemental Plane of Earth since the first Monster Manual was published in 1977. Typically, it has three legs, three arms, and its vast maw occupies much of its lower body.

Although Xorn may appear frighteningly monstrous, they’re actually more like wild creatures. Clever explorers can navigate around them by offering gemstones or valuable metals as a distraction, followed by a quick escape while they feast on the offerings.

In a recent video posted on the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel, the developers of the 2025 Monster Manual discussed an unusual aspect of the Xorn’s mouth – they had to revert changes to its attack pattern due to a rather amusing predicament.

They mentioned, “We actually redesigned the Xorn, which almost made it into the book. We aimed to enhance the mouth on its head and had the Xorn swallowing creatures it was attacking inside its head. But then we noticed it would give an appearance that the adventurers were wearing Xorn trousers. Consequently, we decided to abandon this design.

With a Master tier subscription on D&D Beyond, fans now get an early peek at the Monster Manual, allowing them to marvel at the latest incarnation of the Xorn in full splendor. Despite having several attack options, the Xorn does not pose a threat to grab adventurers.

I truly feel regretful that the Xorn characters no longer possess their distinctive pant-less appearance, as they were already quite amusing creatures. Losing this trait might have made them even more endearing to fans like myself.
