The Walking Dead Showrunner Aims to Keep the Franchise Alive Forever

Summary

  • The Walking Dead franchise expands with new spinoffs, like Dead City and Daryl Dixon.
  • Scott Gimple aims to keep the TWD universe alive, never wanting the series to end.
  • Despite challenges and criticism, The Walking Dead plans to continue with character-driven storytelling.

Despite The Walking Dead coming to an end in 2022, the franchise has given life to numerous engaging spinoffs like AMC’s The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. As a result, fans of post-apocalyptic settings have continued to indulge in its universe since the conclusion of the main series, and it appears that the show’s producer, Scott Gimple, anticipates this world to persist for years to come.

The TV series “The Walking Dead” presents a grim perspective of a world post-apocalyptic due to a catastrophic zombie infestation. The story revolves around Rick Grimes, portrayed by Andrew Lincoln, who emerges from a prolonged coma in what fans often label as an exceptional opening episode. His quest for his family leads him to discover his wife and son, along with other survivors, and embark on a journey to learn how to survive without contracting the virus. Although the show doesn’t explore if the virus has affected regions outside of America, spin-offs suggest that the entire planet has collapsed as well, with North America and Europe both left in ruins. With numerous paths to explore and countless tales to share, the world of “The Walking Dead” has endless potential, which its showrunner eagerly anticipates.

The Walking Dead Boss Wants the Series to Never End: “We’re Picking Up the Torch”

In an interview with Collider, Scott Gimple – who was a writer and producer for season 2 of The Walking Dead and is now the franchise’s chief content officer – shared his desire for the series to continue producing spinoffs and never truly ending. As Robert Kirkman initially pitched the comic book as an endless zombie story, Gimple echoed this sentiment, feeling disappointed when the comics concluded. However, he emphasized that they are now carrying on the legacy by creating more content.

Earlier, Scott M. Gimple admitted that the show “The Walking Dead” might have overstepped a boundary when it killed off one of its most beloved characters, Steven Yeun’s Glenn. The death of Glenn was considered one of the series’ most controversial, leading many dedicated fans to stop watching the show altogether. In an interview with Salon, Gimple expressed remorse, saying “I truly didn’t want to upset you,” but added, “but Robert [Kirkman] disappointed me!” Gimple was referring to Kirkman’s comic where Glenn died before his TV counterpart met his end at Negan’s feet.

Despite the numerous television shows that have emerged since 2010, when “The Walking Dead” first aired, its creator, Gimple, recognizes and appreciates the show’s enduring fanbase. He aims to build upon the elements that made it successful in the first place – its captivating character development. As he put it, “It’s challenging in a world with so many TV shows, but yes, our goal is to keep ‘The Walking Dead’ shows running, to continue featuring beloved characters and taking creative risks with new shows.

2025 will keep expanding the world of The Walking Dead, as we delve deeper into Dead City for season 2 with characters like Negan and Maggie, and continue the journey of Daryl Dixon in season 3.
