As a child, you come to understand that some aspects of life remain unchanging truths. For instance, the sun ascends in the east and descends in the west, people will ultimately pass away, and annually, Sports Interactive unveils a new edition of the Football Manager game.

For the very first time since 1994, Sports Interactive has declared they will be taking a break from releasing a new game in their series this year.

As a dedicated fan, I was taken aback when I read the somber statement on Football Manager’s official social media platforms. The announcement, in essence, revealed that after thorough discussions and thoughtful consideration with SEGA, Sports Interactive has chosen to terminate the production of Football Manager 25.

The follow-up to the renowned football coaching manual faced numerous challenges prior to being discontinued. Previously, SEGA’s president, Shuji Utsumi, shared that the release of Football Manager 2025 was postponed last year because of a concern over its quality.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly waiting for Football Manager 25 since it was first announced, with many of us pre-ordering the game back then. However, what we were anticipating was a launch in March, not the original November 2024 release window.

The Sports Interactive announcement indicates it required a considerable amount of time to disclose the decision due to the need for compliance with stakeholders, particularly considering legal and financial rules, which delayed the company’s initial public offering until now.

Fans of Football Manager were expressing worry due to repeated postponements in the release of the new version, yet they continued to eagerly await a demonstration of its gameplay.

Last year, Sports Interactive announced that their marketing strategy emphasized the game would elevate the Football Manager series to cutting-edge technical and visual benchmarks, aligning it with contemporary gaming trends.

As a gamer, I’ve got some disappointing news. We’ve realized that the overall gaming experience and user interface just aren’t up to the mark yet, falling short of the quality you rightfully expect. After rigorous testing with our valued players, we found that the game doesn’t quite meet the standards it should. It seems like we still have a bit of distance to cover before we can deliver the gaming experience you truly deserve.

Given the tight deadlines, releasing Football Manager 25 in March put Sports Interactive in a tough spot. If they didn’t release a flawless game, there was a risk that people might choose to pass on it altogether.

Launching a seasonal football game, leaving just a few months before the close of the European football season, where our main priority lies, potentially jeopardizes the scheduled launch of Football Manager 26, slated for November.

As a dedicated fan, I eagerly await the next nine months, hoping Sports Interactive can rebuild the trust of the player community and create a game that’s worth diving into when it releases in November. If they stumble, it could signal a troubling turning point for one of football gaming’s cornerstones.

For the players, after they have processed their refunds (if necessary), there’s just one thing left to do: download the new season update add-on for Football Manager 2024.
