League of Legends Devs Defend Unpopular Hextech Chest Changes, Promise Better Battle Passes

The sneak peek at Riot Games’ 2025 seasonal plan for League of Legends was overshadowed by the controversial choice to eliminate free Hextech Chests. In today’s announcement, the team justified this decision but pledged several adjustments aimed at enhancing battle passes in the future.

Riot Says the Removal of Free Hextech Chests is Necessary

In 2025 season one, the League of Legends team confirmed their decision to make Hextech Chests exclusively available in the store. For quite some time, players had been accustomed to earning and opening these chests at no cost, which allowed free-to-play players to enjoy the game and collect cosmetics. However, earlier this year, Riot Games announced that they were eliminating free Hextech Chests, instead making them purchasable items.

The combination of these modifications, along with other changes disliked by the player community, almost sparked a rebellion among gamers. Many League of Legends enthusiasts expressed their intent to stop playing the game entirely. In today’s update, developers acknowledged that free Hextech Chests have become the main method for players to acquire skins, resulting in fewer skin purchases. As a free-to-play title, League of Legends heavily depends on player skin purchases, and the developers emphasize that this isn’t about boosting profits, but ensuring the game’s longevity.

The League of Legends developers acknowledge that these modifications are met with disapproval, and they aim to address the issue of eliminating free Hextech Chests by enhancing rewards within the revamped battle pass. In the upcoming battle pass skins, there will be more striking visual effects, and acquiring a battle pass skin will also grant the corresponding champion if the player doesn’t already possess it. Missions in the battle pass that demand players to utilize purchased skins will no longer exist. Some challenging battle pass missions are either being eliminated or revised. Additionally, Battle pass XP from Teamfight Tactics is now doubled.
