Onimusha 2 Remaster: A Game-Changer for Capcom’s Future Releases!

During a recent Spotlight event, Capcom offered glimpses into some of their upcoming games, such as the anticipated titles, “Capcom Fighting Collection 2”, “Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics” and “Street Fighter 6”. However, the most intriguing reveal from this event was arguably “Onimusha: Way of the Sword”. This upcoming game, unveiled at The Game Awards 2024, marks the first major installment in the “Onimusha” series in close to two decades. Scheduled for release in 2026, the developers shared their ambitions for this project, though they didn’t reveal much gameplay during this showcase.

Despite being previously announced, the presence of Onimusha: Way of the Sword at the Capcom Spotlight event was still unexpected, considering many may not have anticipated hearing more about it so soon. What made this even more surprising was another Onimusha-related announcement from Capcom during the showcase – just as they were finishing their preview for Way of the Sword, they revealed that the original 2002 hack-and-slash game, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, would be remastered for modern platforms. This re-release, due later this year, aims to keep fans engaged until Way of the Sword is released. If it proves popular, Capcom may consider porting the other mainline Onimusha games to current systems.

After Onimusha 2, Capcom Should Remaster Onimusha 3 and 4 As Well

The popular Onimusha series had a surprisingly brief run, with most games being released between 2001 and 2006, spanning just five years. Apart from the Japan-exclusive browser spin-off Onimusha Soul, all other Onimusha titles were produced during this period. As of now, there are only four mainline Onimusha games in the action series, each one launched during the PlayStation 2 era and primarily available on retro consoles.

The First Onimusha Game Received a Remaster Several Years Ago

Back in the day, I found myself immersed in the thrilling world of Onimusha: Warlords on my PlayStation 2 back in 2001. Fast forward to years later, and it seemed like the franchise was taking a break, but then came the exciting news – Onimusha: Warlords was getting a comeback! In 2019, I got to revisit this classic on my PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or PC. While the remaster wasn’t as game-changing as Capcom’s Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, it still delivered an enhanced experience with upgraded visuals, widescreen support, better analog controls, and a fresh soundtrack to match.

Initially, fans of gaming anticipated that because Onimusha: Warlords was suddenly being remastered, other games in the Onimusha series might follow suit. However, as time passed, Capcom provided no updates regarding future remasters within the franchise. It was speculated, based on inside sources and whispers at the time, that Capcom chose to suspend the Onimusha franchise because the remastered version of Onimusha: Warlords didn’t sell well, thus momentarily shattering the dreams for an Onimusha series comeback.

Onimusha 3 and 4 Remasters Should Be Released Before Onimusha: Way of the Sword Comes Out

I’m thrilled about it, but here’s the deal – Capcom’s working on a new Onimusha game and remastering Onimusha 2. That means there’s a better chance than ever before for other games in the franchise to make their way onto modern gaming platforms. I’m crossing my fingers that they’ll bring Onimusha 3: Demon Siege and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (or Onimusha 4) to current-gen consoles. Right now, those games are just hanging out on the PlayStation 2, and they really need a makeover. If Capcom decides to bring these games up-to-date, they should do it before Onimusha: Way of the Sword drops so fans can get up to speed with the series’ storyline.
