There have been persistent rumors suggesting that Resident Evil 0 might be the next title from the Resident Evil (RE) series to receive a remake. Various reputable sources, such as IGN, have supported these leaks, although Capcom has not officially confirmed them. Given the finite number of mainline entries in the franchise, it’s reasonable to speculate that Capcom might remake Resident Evil 0 at some point, so it’s intriguing to consider what this hypothetical game could entail.
Compared to earlier Resident Evil games before the release of RE4, Resident Evil 0 stands out as something special. Instead of following a single protagonist like previous games, this one splits the story between characters Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen. Set before the events of RE1, it immerses players in a chilling atmosphere filled with new enemy types and settings that are both claustrophobic and terrifying. Despite its flaws, there’s no denying that RE0 is innovative, as it takes risks by modifying or eliminating familiar series elements. In the event of a remake, it would be wise to enhance its unique creative choices while minimizing changes to mechanics that don’t fit the original gameplay experience.
What a Resident Evil 0 Remake Needs
An RE0 Remake Should Flesh Out the Original’s Train Section
Among the various locations in Resident Evil 0, none are as iconic or memorable as the train. This game’s train stands out more than many other RE trains from its time, offering a nail-biting, claustrophobic, and terrifying journey through a forest infested with zombies. The Umbrella-controlled rail is perfectly suited to the survival horror genre due to its tense, confined, and frightening atmosphere.
In simpler terms, the train section of the game creates a confined and anxious atmosphere, making it harder for players to evade enemies and find safe spots. This part of the game sets the tone for the entire experience. Although Capcom might consider emphasizing other areas like the Umbrella Training School or Chemical Plant, the train segment is crucial for establishing the game’s mood. Players immediately feel trapped on the train and relieved when they escape, so expanding this section could significantly enhance the overall remake’s impact, regardless of changes to other parts of the game.
A Remake of Resident Evil 0 Should Walk Back the Original’s Inventory System
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel frustrated about one particular change in Resident Evil 0 – the absence of item boxes, a fundamental feature that has been a cornerstone of the Resident Evil series since its inception. Instead of having an item box that transfers items automatically between safe rooms, players are required to drop their items where they stand to create more inventory space. Combined with RE0’s strict inventory management, this drastic shift just doesn’t sit right. It feels clunky and inconvenient, and it doesn’t add any depth or excitement to the classic resource management challenge that Resident Evil is known for. A return to the traditional item box system in Resident Evil would significantly improve the remake’s playability.
Billy and Rebecca Should Still Play Differently
One captivating characteristic of “Resident Evil 0” is the unique roles each main character plays due to their contrasting abilities. For example, Rebecca has the skill to combine herbs to enhance their strength, while Billy can withstand more damage and move heavy objects. If the remake adopts the same third-person-shooter mechanics as its predecessors, it could be intriguing to amplify this contrast. Perhaps the remade Billy could emulate the iconic Chris Redfield, plowing through monsters with brute force, while the remade Rebecca could be more agile and strategic, capable of executing special moves to escape grapples or create unique resources. The way “Resident Evil 0” handles multiple protagonists is one of the series’ most intriguing aspects, and focusing on these smaller details could significantly contribute to the success of its remake.
