Following the extraordinary achievement of “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury,” the franchise introduces a fresh TV Series titled “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.” What makes this series distinctive is that it’s being produced by Studio Khara, the same studio behind the “Rebuild of Evangelion” films. Notably, it will be directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and written by Hideaki Anno, both from the Evangelion team. This collaboration marks the first time the Gundam and Evangelion crews are joining forces to create a new piece of Gundam content together.

Initially, three episodes from the new Gundam series produced by the Evangelion studio were combined into a movie that premiered in Japanese cinemas on January 17, 2025. This movie unveiled essential details about the setting and timeline within the Gundam universe, along with information derived from the official Gundam GQuuuuuuX Gunpla model kit. Here’s a rundown of the new Gundam series’ setting and timeline.

An Alternate Path For The Universal Century

A Completely Different Outcome

In a different timeline or the Universal Century, Gundam GQuuuuuuX unfolds. This timeline follows a different path from the one depicted in the classic series Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. After the Earth Federation completes their initial Gundam model, the RX-78-02, an elite squad led by Char Aznable, the Red Comet, sneaks into Side 7 and makes off with the Gundam. During the heist, Char encounters the RX-78-01 prototype but manages to overcome it. With the stolen Gundam in tow, Char returns to his base. Zeon engineers examine and study the Gundam extensively, eventually reverse engineering it for mass production. This move causes Zeon to abandon their Mobile Armor unit project based on the Psycommu system and instead, they produce numerous Gundams. Additionally, they create the formidable mobile armor, the Big Zam in large quantities as well.

The Federation advances in crafting the Guncannon, incorporating tech from the Gundam to produce a stronger version, dubbed the Guncannon Light, yet less potent than the original Gundam. As the Earth Federation-Zeon conflict persists, the Federation manages to seize Solomon, a crucial Zeon stronghold, with plans to hurl it towards Granada, reminiscent of Zeon’s Earth colony drop. Meanwhile, Char Aznable, now equipped with a revamped and retooled Gundam called the Red Gundam, fights valiantly to halt Solomon from impacting Granada.

In a remarkable turn of events, he triumphs by initiating what’s known as The Zeknova, harmonizing his Newtype abilities with the Gundam’s Psycommu system. This occurrence echoes the Axis Shock from ‘Char’s Counterattack’, a detail that seasoned Gundam fans would readily associate. Despite preventing the Solomon drop, this incident leads to Char and the Red Gundam disappearing without a trace. After this significant loss, the Federation urges Zeon to reopen peace talks. Exactly one year after the war’s commencement, on January 3rd, the One-Year War ends with the Principality of Zeon securing a decisive victory.

In this new installment of the Gundam franchise, titled Gundam GQuuuuuuX, we find ourselves in a different Universal Century compared to the original. Char’s successful theft and control of the Gundam during the One-Year War has led to Zeon’s victory, reshaping the world as we know it. This series will be notable for featuring a female protagonist, Amate Yuzuriha, who becomes embroiled in mobile suit clan battles, piloting the titular Gundam. Following the trailblazing The Witch From Mercury, Gundam GQuuuuuuX is the second TV series to center around a female lead.

As reported, it appears that the series titled “The Witch From Mercury” and this new project were concurrently developed. The collaboration with studio Khara dates back to a bond forged during the creation of “Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn“. It is anticipated that “Gundam GQuuuuuuX“, with its unique setting and predominantly produced by the team behind “Evangelion“, will captivate Gundam fans and introduce a refreshing twist to the franchise.
