Every Flower Pokemon, Ranked

Blossoms are pleasing to observe and usually delightful to inhale. Unfortunately, they pose issues for individuals battling hay fever. However, Pokemon alleviates this issue by transforming the floral charm into digital sprites and geometric shapes.

Currently, there’s an incredible diversity in both real-world flowers and Pokemon species. Given this abundance, it’s only logical to expect a substantial number of Flower Pokemon across Grass-, Bug-, and Fairy-types. Why not join me below as we tally up my list ranking everything Pokemon and flower-related?

Rankings take into account various elements such as the aesthetics of the flowers, their daily utility within the world of Pokémon, and their worth in competitive play (evaluation by an expert who has been involved with Pokémon for more than two decades).

In the latest Pokémon generation, the specific Pokémon can be encountered directly within the game, without requiring any transfers from previous generations.

26. Sawsbuck

Flowers With A Spring In Their Step

Type Normal/Grass
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) ZU

The spring variant of Sawsbuck sports small flowers on its antlers that resemble cherry blossoms. As per the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Pokedexes, flowers with lighter hues are considered more valuable, but excessive blooming can potentially harm the host as “the flowers draw nutrients from the Pokemon.

It seems the relationship isn’t completely mutualistic, but it’s possible that the most powerful Sawsbuck could have just one nearly white flower. This could be an intriguing concept for a future Mega Evolution.

This particular Pokemon doesn’t have a higher rank because it blooms only during springtime, and since its flowers don’t play a role in battles.

25. Wormadam (Plant Cloak)

A Cloak Of Flowers Hides As Much As Sand Or Trash

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Sun/Moon) NU

Wormadam, much like Sawsbuck, transforms into a Plant Cloak form that sports only one type of flower adornment. While it’s impressive how the flowers become part of the Pokemon itself, there isn’t much else to highlight about these creatures. Even in their shiny forms, they maintain simple four-petal white blossoms.

Among all forms of Wormadam, you might find it ranked above Sawsbuck because you can encounter them year-round. However, I strongly recommend choosing either the Sandy or Trash Cloak for Wormadam. The reason being, they possess significantly greater resistances due to their typing alteration compared to the Plant Cloak. Regrettably, its overall base stat sum is only 424, and its distribution is not favorable, which means it will likely have minimal application in any competitive scenario.

24. Maractus

A Beautiful, Prickly Customer

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Sword/Shield) ZU

Maractus sports a pair of six-petaled pink blossoms atop its head, signaling to Aerial Pokémon overhead that there’s sweet nectar within reach. Yet, once they alight on it, these Pokémon are deterred by the spikes scattered throughout Maractus’s body.

In the arid territories where both humans and Pokemon reside, Maractus has an additional role – fortunately, not for providing water. Instead, its seeds offer a nutritious source of sustenance. However, be cautious if you venture into the desert, as these seeds are scarce and highly valued delicacies.

In addition, the petals transform into a beautiful shimmering orange hue, earning extra points for its appeal in this particular evaluation.

23. Lurantis

A Brightly-Colored ‘Bug’

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) ZU

Previously, Sudowoodo disguised itself as a tree while secretly belonging to the Rock-type; currently, Lurantis is masquerading as a Bug-type, yet it’s actually part of the Plant group.

Absolutely, it resembles a bug due to its eyes and serrated leaves, but don’t let its vegetable appearance fool you. This plant possesses an uncanny ability to shred its prey into fine strips with its razor-sharp leaves. It boasts vibrant, stunning colors; pink blossoms for the standard version and green/yellow hues for the glossy one. Interestingly, as per the Pokemon Shield Pokedex, its petals can emit laser beams after absorbing sunlight. Quite an impressive party trick, wouldn’t you agree?

This earns points due to its robust statistics (particularly in this category) – however, it’s hindered by an exceptionally slow speed. Yet, it seems hesitant to showcase its blossoming character. Embrace your floral essence, Lurantis!

22. Skiploom

A Hop, Skip, And A Jump

Type Grass/Flying
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) NFE

Skiploom sports a large, sunny-hued blossom atop its head, which unfurls during warmer seasons. Similar to many of these Pokemon, as mentioned in the Pokemon Silver Pokedex, it expands its petals to capture sunlight, although in reality, leaves are typically responsible for this function. Nonetheless, we’ll acknowledge their creativity.

Skiploom stands out among many others for its distinct and individual scents. It’s thought that Skiploom from various regions all have a similar aroma. Generally, it’s a versatile flower, but it lands higher in the first half of this ranking due to other Pokemon’s characteristics being more impressive, not because there’s anything wrong with Skiploom itself.

21. Jumpluff

Blown Away Like A Cotton Puff In The Wind

Type Grass/Flying
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) ZU

Poor Jumpluff, such a fragile creature that gets scattered far by the wind’s might, constantly dispersing its spores. Once these spores are depleted, it withers away – do consider this before you prompt it to use the move Cotton Spore! These cottony spores can also act as a protective measure, much like a bee sting, as inhaling them can potentially cause harm.

In the future, we might uncover more fascinating details about this particular Pokemon, potentially boosting its standing! In competitive play, Jumpluff primarily excels in speed, as it boasts a base Speed stat of 110, comparable to legendary Pokemon like Latios and Diancie. It also has useful backup moves such as Tailwind, making it an appealing substitute for Whimsicott if you’re tired of encountering the same Pokemon across multiple teams.

20. Lilligant (Hisuian Form)

Dance Like A Flower Petal Caught In The Wind

Type Grass/Fighting
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) NUBL (Banned from NU)

In this regional form, Lilligant is our unique and only floral Pokémon. The legs of Lilligant are particularly striking in this shape, resembling a fusion of a flower bulb and a dancer. It appears to be ideally suited for the snow-capped Hisuan region.

Additionally, it acquires the Fighting type, enhancing its defenses against Bug-, Dark-, and Rock-type opponents, but simultaneously making it vulnerable to Flying-types (four times weaker) and amplifying its vulnerability to Psychic- and Fairy-types (twice as weak). This transformation might not be ideal for the dancing blossom. An intriguing feature is that a Hisuian Lilligant’s flower is typically pink, while the shiny variant is orange. This leads me to ponder what led to this color change as modern times drew near.

19. Gloom

Brings Gloom To Most People It Meets

Type Grass/Poison
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) NFE

Three distinct methods of self-defense in nature are represented by Gloom and its evolutions, Vileplume and Bellossom. Gloom has the ability to produce an overpoweringly sweet-smelling nectar. According to the Pokedex, this scent can induce fainting from a distance of approximately 2 kilometers, demonstrating its remarkable potency as a flower.

The flower boasts an appealing look, with extended petals resembling hair and white speckles on the petals, illustrating two distinct methods of evolution for Gloom. If you appreciate its aesthetics and can tolerate its scent, be cautious if a Leaf Stone is in your vicinity, as it will transform into Vileplume.

18. Vileplume

An Absolutely Vile Predator, Come To Think Of It

Type Grass/Poison
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) NU

Vileplume, as mentioned in the Pokedex of Pokemon Gold, boasts the biggest petals among all creatures. Interestingly, it’s incredibly poisonous, a characteristic that many seemingly innocent flower Pokemon share. Surprisingly, it seems that Pokemon isn’t just for kids, with towering flowers like these posing potential threats!

The flower boasts intricate details, featuring white specks scattered across each of its five petals, resembling a mushroom from a toadstool. Vileplume, on the other hand, possesses balanced stats and an impressive Special Attack stat of 110. However, it falls into the lower tier rankings due to its health and safety precautions.

17. Cherrim (Overcast Form)

Here Comes The Rain Again

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Sword/Shield) ZU

In its usual state, Cherrim remains stationary, enduring various challenges while basking in the sun. As mentioned by Professor Laverton in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, other Pokemon are often seen congregating near it due to a subtle fragrance emanating from its folded petals. This makes it quite easy to locate, as it tends to be relatively immobile when in this form. Despite its low base defense stats of 70/78, it manages to withstand numerous obstacles.

The design of this Pokemon, a Cherubi, is distinctly unique among others, not primarily designed for showiness. Instead, it sports two vibrant purple (or light blue if it’s shiny) petals that encase its body. This dual nature boosts its uniqueness yet hinders it, as the beautiful flowers are concealed within. Unfortunately, its average stats don’t offer much support either.

16. Eldegoss

Spinning A Good Yarn

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Sword/Shield) PU

Eldegoss appears elderly-like, boasting a massive ball of cotton for hair. It’s quite endearing, isn’t it? As per the Pokédex in Sword & Shield, this cotton can be woven into premium yarn, which is delightful – let’s hope it’s as soft as cashmere!

From an aesthetic perspective, there are many appealing aspects to this Pokémon. However, its shiny form’s limited impact on the cotton ball accessory, which primarily affects the Pokémon’s body, causes it to fall slightly behind its pre-evolution in this specific ranking. While it boasts a striking appearance, this characteristic is less relevant for the criteria used in this list. Additionally, it seems somewhat lacking in practicality, as its notable stat is Special Defense, but it doesn’t excel in other areas.

15. Shaymin (Sky Form)

Is It A Bird, A Plane, Or A Flower?

Type Grass/Flying
Smogon Tier Uber

As a gamer, I’d say, “Shaymin Sky Form is quite an intriguing Pokémon in its essence. This flower-like hedgehog transforms when near a Gracidea plant, donning a bandanna made from the plant and shedding four of its six petals. It seems to be moving further away from its floral origins, which I find a bit frustrating.

Don’t fret! It develops telepathic abilities, although the movie “Giratina and the Sky Warrior” suggests it might have an annoying demeanor (your personal opinion might vary).

Among all the Flower Pokemon, Shaymin’s Sky Form is arguably the toughest competitor, boasting a base Special Attack of 120 and a base Speed of 127. It’s a clear advantage if you choose to use it! However, despite being stronger and faster than its Altered Form, which places in the Uber tier on Smogon compared to the Normal (NU) tier for the Altered Form, Sky Form’s focus on flowery attributes has noticeably diminished, hence its lower positioning on this specific ranking list.

14. Cherrim (Sunshine Form)

It’s Walking On Sunshine

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Sword/Shield) ZU

When the sun’s rays intensify around Cherrim, it responds by unfurling its petals and springing into action. This vibrant bloom brings joy to its companions while plotting retribution against its adversaries. In its Sunlit Form, not only does Cherrim open more petals, but they transform to a delicate pink hue, sprout additional petals, and alter its entire body to a radiant yellow color.

The item loses some points due to its glossy appearance, as it only subtly shifts to a pink hue instead of maintaining the Overcast Form’s blue tone. This change doesn’t affect its stats or abilities at all, making it merely aesthetic when it comes to combat. Enjoy its Sunshine Form while you can, as it will revert back if the weather gets cloudy or stormy.

13. Lilligant (Unovan Form)

A Regal Flower Fit For A Princess

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) ZU

As a gamer, I can’t help but admire the regal crown-like bloom that adorns Lilligant’s head. It’s quite a task to care for such a towering flower, which leads me to wonder: are trainers who nurture Grass Pokémon essentially gardeners in disguise? The flower boasts an impressive array of thick petals, ranging from bright orange or delicate pink – it seems like Lilligant might struggle under the weight of its own grandeur.

Much like other Pokemon, Lilligant’s bloom emits a delightful scent, and the essential oils from it are highly valued in markets, making them quite expensive. As noted in the entry for Hisuan Lilligant, this particular form is superior due to its slightly enhanced resistances compared to its ancient ancestor, and its flower plays a more significant role in its overall design.

12. Venusaur

A Big Sturdy Flower For A Big Sturdy Pokemon

Type Grass/Poison
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) PU
Mega Form – Smogon Tier (Sun/Moon) UUBL (Under Used Banned List)

Oh, Venusaur, the initial bloom amidst the Pokémon bouquet! It’s fascinating how this green, lively, and noble creature continues to be a popular topic despite Pokémon being one of the longest-running RPG series. This enduring relevance speaks volumes about its impressive design.

As a gamer, I can’t help but admire Venusaur’s stunning flower – its soft pastel hues are truly captivating! What makes it even more fascinating is that this beauty emits an enchanting scent, drawing in wild Pokémon towards me, making my trainer life all the more exciting with Sweet Scent at my disposal.

In bright daylight, it’s possible to unleash Solar Beam, a potent attack from grass-type characters, straight at surprised opponents. This move also benefits from the hidden ability Chlorophyll, which doubles its speed in sunlight conditions.

Isn’t it great that its Mega Evolution enlarges everything, boosts its size, and eliminates the Fire and Ice vulnerabilities using Thick Fat? Plus, the addition of a charming blossom on its forehead and the removal of two weaknesses that are typical among flower Pokemon? There’s really nothing not to love!

11. Meganium

Mega Flower, Mega Pokemon, But No Mega Evolution

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) ZU

Among the starters listed, Meganium is the second one fully evolved, and almost set a pattern for Grass-type starters by being flower-based. However, Sceptile came along and disrupted that trend with its coolness and sharp edges. A sigh of disappointment followed.

To be honest, I’ve always had a soft spot for Meganium. Compared to other starters, it carries a more rounded, tranquil aesthetic that sets it apart. Its six-petaled flower collar is quite striking, turning a vibrant orange when it’s in its shiny form, adding an extra touch of charm to its overall look.

Meganium ranks lower compared to its fellow Grass-type starter counterparts, Venusaur and Torterra, as they all share the lowest base stat totals among them. Additionally, unlike Venusaur and Torterra which have dual typings, Meganium lacks such diversity, making it comparable to other stronger Pokemon like Sceptile that possess more diverse typing abilities.

10. Roselia

A Thorn In Your Side

Type Grass/Poison
Smogon Tier (Sword/Shield) NFE

Roselia sports two distinctly colored blooms at the tips of its limbs – either red and blue or purple with a glossy sheen that turns into a darker shade of purple and black. The flowers resemble roses in shape and have a harmful effect if touched due to their toxic nature.

It’s quite noticeable that many Flower Pokemon, including Roselia, seem to possess characteristics that make their most attractive feature also their deadliest, similar to certain modern-day amphibians.

1) Apart from their fame, they are also recognized for their delightful scent. Notably, one of these trainers is Drew from the Pokemon Advanced series, who radiated charisma and was as potent as the fragrant Roselia he carried. Yet, the most pristine and powerful member of this evolutionary chain has yet to make an appearance.

Bonus points: This Pokemon’s trainer was Drew, a character from the Pokemon Advanced anime who exuded charm like the toxic flowers that Roselia carries. The strongest and purest form in its evolutionary line is still waiting to be seen.

9. Sunflora

A Smiling Sunflower That Reminds Me Of The Teletubbies

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) ZU

As a dedicated flower enthusiast, I’d nearly crown Sunflora as the epitome of floral excellence. Unlike other flowers that adorn their heads and limbs, Sunflora’s extraordinary charm lies in its head being none other than a sunflower itself! In terms of strength, this sun-loving Pokémon boasts an impressively high Special Attack, starting at a base 105.

It seems challenging to fight against a Sunflora since its head should constantly face the sun. I can’t quite imagine how it manages indoors in a gym, but I’m confident that trainers have taken this into account when preparing for battles.

During the day, Sunflora is constantly on the move in search of sunlight, much like Cherrim. But once the sun sets, it becomes motionless. It’s important to remember that Sunflora can only evolve from Sunkern with a Sun Stone in your possession.

8. Bellossom

Blossoms Into A Beautiful Icon

Type Grass
Smogon Tier (Scarlet/Violet) ZU

Contrarily, Bellossom blooms more elegantly when the Gloom it evolved from had a strong aroma. Its five red petals arranged on either side of its head resemble hair, and its flower displays and movements are highly admired across the region. Don’t forget to keep a Sun Stone handy for evolving your Gloom into this enchanting Pokemon.

In this specific ranking, Bellossom outranks Vileplume due to its strong association with “flower Pokemon,” making it one of the most recognizable when people think of these characters. Plus, it earns extra points for the charming dance it performs in the short film accompanying the second movie, Pikachu’s Rescue Adventure – it’s really cute!

7. Roserade

Don’t Hold Me Close, Thorny Dancer

Type Grass/Poison
Smogon Tier (Sword/Shield) RU

Roserade is an evolution that amps up all of Roselia’s characteristics. Unlike Roselia, which has one rose at the end of each arm, Roserade boasts three roses. The vines on its left side hold a slow-acting poison, while those on the right contain a quicker poison. It’s important to avoid being struck by either of these toxic vines. Roserade exudes an air of both terrible and graceful elegance, much like its pre-evolved form.

As a seasoned Pokémon Trainer, I can confidently say that this creature packs a serious punch in competitive battles, boasting an impressive Special Attack stat and some heavy-hitting STAB moves like Sludge Bomb and Energy Ball. It may not be the quickest on its feet, but when it lands a hit, it’s often game over.
