Summary
- Disney’s Snow White live-action remake may have a lower opening box office compared to past remakes.
- The film faces backlash but has the potential for long-term success based on examples like Maleficent and The Lion King prequel.
- Despite concerns and criticisms, Snow White’s box office projections don’t suggest it’s doomed to flop.
Disney’s real-life adaptation of the classic tale Snow White, featuring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot from Wonder Woman, is set to hit theaters next month. Predictions for the movie’s box office performance are now available, and there’s a mix of apprehension and anticipation surrounding its success.
The newly released Disney film titled “Snow White” is part of their series of live-action adaptations of classic animated stories. While films like Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” and Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent” have been well-received, most viewers tend to criticize Disney’s live-action remakes for being lifeless copies of the originals. Nevertheless, these movies often bring financial success to Disney. However, the recent releases such as “The Little Mermaid” showed that this is not always the case. The projected box office earnings for “Snow White” suggest it may have a lower opening than other live-action remakes, but this doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a flop.
According to Deadline’s report, Disney’s Snow White is projected to generate between $63-$70 million in its first three days at the domestic box office. Other sources estimate a $65 million opening weekend. This would represent a new high for leading actress Zegler, surpassing her previous best, $44.6 million from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. However, it’s important to note that this is significantly lower than the opening weekends of Disney’s more successful live-action remakes like 2019’s The Lion King ($191.77 million) and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast ($174.7 million), which ultimately grossed over $1 billion worldwide each.

If the projected earnings at Quorum’s box office remain consistent, ‘Snow White’ might have a lower opening than ‘The Little Mermaid’ live-action remake from 2023 in terms of domestic debut. The former earned $95.6 million over three days and $118.8 million over four days during the Memorial Day Weekend, which was deemed a disappointing start. Despite earning $569.6 million globally, ‘The Little Mermaid’ live-action remake is generally seen as a failure due to its substantial production costs and advertising expenses. These outlays led to low profits for the film, with some reports suggesting it even lost money for Disney.
Even though there are doubts due to the past performance of similar films, there’s cause for hope. For instance, ‘Maleficent’ started with a domestic take of $69.4 million and eventually grossed $758.5 million worldwide, suggesting a sequel was warranted, although the second film didn’t perform as expected financially. More recently, Disney’s ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’, a prequel focusing on Mufasa and Scar, surprised many when it debuted alongside ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ and came in second with $35.4 million. However, ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ went on to outperform ‘Sonic 3’ in later weeks, amassing a total of $671.1 million worldwide. This could mean that ‘Snow White’ might experience similar long-term box office success despite its opening weekend earnings being relatively low.
It seems that the upcoming movie version of Snow White, featuring actress Zegler in the title role, might face some challenges to win over audiences. Some conservative critics have voiced disapproval over the casting choice, and their criticism escalated when Zegler criticized the original animated film. However, it’s important to note that there are valid concerns about the film, particularly concerning the CG-rendered dwarfs shown in the initial trailer. Nonetheless, early box office predictions suggest that the film may not be a complete failure, which could provide some relief given Disney’s recent track record with live-action remakes.
Disney’s Snow White releases in theaters on March 21, 2025.
