After almost three decades in the gaming industry, the timeless MMORPG known as “Tibia” has unveiled a fresh class called The Monk. Intriguingly, CipSoft shared a sneak peek video of Tibia’s latest profession, accompanied by a statement from their product manager, offering an insider look at this surprising expansion to the classic MMORPG.
Tibia, established as one of the pioneers and long-standing online Multiplayer Role Playing Games (MMO RPGs), continues to be active in today’s gaming landscape, even though it may not be as famous as some others. It is included among the timeless MMO classics such as World of Warcraft or RuneScape, which maintain substantial player communities. The game emphasizes exploration, battle, and social engagement, and stands out by having no level limit, allowing players to advance indefinitely. Originally launched in 1997, Tibia initially offered only four character classes (known as “vocations”): Knight, Paladin, Druid, and Sorcerer. However, since its debut, the game had never added new classes – until now.
CipSoft has unveiled a sneak peek video for the upcoming class joining the 30-year-old free-to-play PC game Tibia: The Monk. This new character will bring its unique combat system and three distinct virtues, each with active and passive influences. The brief 34-second clip only showcases the Monk’s artwork and hints at its impending arrival. After the teaser, product manager “Niadus” shared details about this fresh profession in a blog post, discussing the hurdles this addition posed for the development team.
Classic MMORPG Tibia Adding New ‘Monk’ Class After Nearly 30 Years
As a devoted fan, I’d like to highlight an intriguing aspect of the Monk character that sets it apart in the game: its unique “harmony” system. This system, as Niadus puts it, gives the Monk a distinct edge over other vocations. The Monk’s combat is centered around this harmony, which we use tactically to deal damage or heal ourselves and allies.
In essence, the Monk has special attack spells that are powered by harmony. This strategy-focused gameplay requires us to carefully manage our harmony levels to maximize our effectiveness in battle. Furthermore, the Monk’s virtues enhance three different aspects of its performance, each granting a passive healing ability. Whether we’re healing ourselves or an ally, this passive skill is always at our disposal, making the Monk a versatile and valuable addition to any team.
The boss made clear that the fresh role needed to be a melee combatant, given that the game Tibia currently offers three ranged roles. This prompted thorough deliberation about the character’s offensive and healing potential, aiming for its effectiveness in both group and solo gaming within this classic MMORPG. After careful consideration, CipSoft looked at traditional roles such as Rogue, Bard, and Monk, eventually settling on the Monk because it best matched their creative vision.
Niadus shared that incorporating a fresh profession into the game seemed initially overwhelming – too intricate and risky – but CipSoft thought it could reignite the feeling of exploration within Tibia. As players eagerly anticipate the arrival of the Monk, it will be intriguing to observe how this unforeseen expansion measures up against other well-established old-school MMORPGs.
