Summary
- Amazon won’t return the rights to Harry Bosch, but a compromise should be reached with Netflix for future seasons.
- Fans are pushing back with a Save Bosch: Legacy petition for one more season or a movie.
- Amazon prioritizes promotional value over honoring Bosch author Connelly’s vision, hindering character development.
As a dedicated moviegoer, I’m excited to share that “Bosch: Legacy” will grace our screens once more on March 27, 2025. However, this will be the final hurrah for Harry Bosch’s solo adventures, as Amazon decided to cut the show short before its third season. The creative team behind the scenes had big plans for another season, but unfortunately, those dreams were dashed by the cancellation.
You might be interested to know that Michael Connelly, the author of these gripping books, sold the rights to Harry Bosch to Amazon way back in 2014. Our partnership has been largely successful, but the cancelation has put a bit of a damper on things.
Is there a possibility for Amazon Studios to retransfer the rights of Harry Bosch back to Michael Connelly, enabling him to move the character to Netflix or another streaming platform? Given Titus Welliver’s desire to continue playing Bosch in a reduced role on the Ballard spin-off and Connelly’s ongoing partnership with Amazon, it seems intricate but not impossible. Bosch could potentially collaborate with The Lincoln Lawyer or appear on a different streaming service, provided they can find a solution that accommodates both the Ballard spin-off and the continued relationship with Amazon.

In many successful partnerships, disagreements can arise, leading each party to part ways after reaching an agreement. However, Michael Connelly finds himself in a predicament because Amazon owns the rights to the television adaptation of Harry Bosch. They plan to utilize the character sparingly within the Ballard spin-off, making it challenging for other streaming services or networks to pick up Bosch: Legacy. Fans would love to see a crossover between Bosch: Legacy and the show The Lincoln Lawyer, which exists in the same literary world as Michael Connelly’s book series, but it remains difficult due to this connection with Amazon.
Amazon aims to keep Harry Bosch a central character to connect Bosch: Legacy with Ballard, using him as a marketing strategy for the latter series. The cancellation of Bosch: Legacy was decided upon earlier, but Amazon opted not to produce a joint Bosch/Ballard show, despite this being how the characters interact in Michael Connelly’s book series. Instead, Amazon seems unwilling to adhere to Connelly’s portrayal of Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard, so it’s time for the cold case investigator to break free and pursue her own path in the upcoming spin-off, while allowing Harry Bosch to continue his independent journey elsewhere.

Amazon Won’t Hand The Rights Back To Michael Connelly But There Is A Compromise That Could Be Reached
If Marvel Studios and Disney can collaborate on Spider-Man, it’s reasonable to assume that Amazon could do the same with Harry Bosch and partner with Netflix or another streaming service. This way, we might see Harry Bosch appearing in Ballard, while still solving cases independently in Bosch: Legacy on a different platform. The fans are demanding more of Harry Bosch, and they’ve made their wishes clear through the Save Bosch: Legacy petition to keep him active. They want either one final season to conclude the story or a full-length Bosch: Legacy movie.

If Netflix were able to convince the former LAPD detective to join their platform instead of Amazon, he could potentially work on both The Lincoln Lawyer cases and further develop his story in Bosch: Legacy. However, it’s highly improbable that this will happen, given that the original Bosch series played a significant role in boosting Amazon’s streaming popularity over a decade ago. Regrettably, Hollywood isn’t known for its loyalty, and Amazon appears to be content with maintaining control over the iconic Harry Bosch character by limiting guest appearances in related spin-offs like Ballard, rather than sharing it with other platforms or producers.
