As a child who spent my early days with a Nintendo gaming system, transitioning to a PlayStation 1 and eventually a PlayStation 2 was quite an adjustment. Interestingly, this change happened during my adolescence, which made it even more significant as I found myself yearning for a touch of rebellion.
In my case, I found delight in playing games with a more complex and adult theme. Games such as the Legacy of Kain series were among those that brought me this enjoyment.
Initially, it was “Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain” that I tried out, but it wasn’t until I played the original “Soul Reaver” that I became fully captivated.
This collection delves deeply into the shadows, unveiling a sinister, grotesque reality where traditional heroes are scarce, yet compelling villains and anti-heroes thrive.

6. Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Two Vampires for the Price of One
In theory, “Legacy of Kain: Defiance” ought to have been an undeniable success. After all, it allows gamers to control both Kain and Raziel throughout their shared journey.
Positively, it was likely the most aesthetically stunning game within the series prior to the launch of Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered. However, in terms of gameplay, Defiance fell short of expectations.
The action and control aspects felt dull and lacked creativity. However, if you managed to complete the game, it’s likely due to your strong interest in the captivating backstory of the franchise rather than enjoying the gameplay itself.
Should you manage to persevere, this new installment remains a valuable contribution to the collection. Fortunately, the quality of the remaining entries in the series can only improve from now on!
5. Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
A Bloody Beginning
Platform | PC, PS1, PS3, PS4, PS5 |
---|---|
Publisher | Crystal Dynamics, Activision, Blizzard |
Genre | ARPG, adventure |
Release Date | November 1, 1996 |
In my gaming history, Blood Omen wasn’t the first dark game I encountered, but it was likely the second, preceded by about few years by Demon’s Crest on the SNES. This game didn’t have you controlling a typical hero, but rather a ruthless vampire character instead.
In Nosgoth, Kain’s main drive is seeking brutal retribution, and there’s no shortage of it throughout your journey. Instead of being just an average vampire, Kain transforms into a monstrous deity as you advance and annihilate the Circle of Nine.
What made the game exceptional was its open-ended nature, offering freedom for unstructured discovery while players transformed humans, acquired fresh abilities, and caused chaos.
Although the game appears dated with its top-down perspective and outdated mechanics, it provided an engaging introduction to Kain’s character and offered a brief, chilling preview of his dark transformation in later installments.
4. Blood Omen 2
Two Kain, Too Furious
In several aspects, Blood Omen 2 deviated from what fans anticipated following the Soul Reaver series. Instead, it resembled a contemporary adaptation of the original Blood Omen, but in an alternate timeline linking that game to the first Soul Reaver.
Essentially, it boiled down to the game focusing less on complex puzzles or story-driven exploration, and more on giving Kain an outlet for his anger by allowing him to attack anything in sight.
Although it wasn’t entirely disappointing, I couldn’t help but feel that it could have showcased more originality rather than being a replica of the game that initiated the franchise.
This time, the primary adversary we’re dealing with is the Sarafan Order, a band of vigilant vampire slayers who not only outmatched Kain but also seized the Soul Reaver from his spectral grasp.
At a minimum, the game’s visual appeal was captivating, although the narrative set in an alternate timeline could have been more impactful.
3. Soul Reaver 2
Raziel’s Torment
Following the triumphant occurrences in the initial game, Soul Reaver 2 faced high expectations, particularly given the suspenseful finale of the first installment that left many questions unanswered.
Regarding its success debatably, Soul Reaver 2 was nonetheless an entertaining follow-up game.
Players will once more assume control over Raziel, navigating between the Physical and Ethereal realms, consuming spirits, and searching for insights regarding their origin.
Crystal Dynamics really pushed the boundaries and aimed to include a multitude of elements in the narrative. Regrettably, they also incorporated additional time-travel aspects.
If you enjoyed the original “Soul Reaver”, you’ll likely find much to appreciate in this one as well. However, whether it delivers a truly satisfying ending is something that remains to be seen.
2. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered
A Massive HD Facelift
Despite the current trend of remakes, I must admit that I wasn’t anticipating a remake encompassing both the adventures of Soul Reaver.
Despite my usual reluctance towards reselling games to modern gamers, I must concede that the remastered version of Soul Reaver 1 & 2 certainly looks impressive.
The most enjoyable aspect of this game lies in its seamless design, allowing you to effortlessly transition between levels without any delays or interruptions.
As a gamer, what left me feeling underwhelmed was the lack of fresh, exciting content to explore, with the exception of the visually stunning new graphics.
If you absolutely love retro games, you can opt to experience this collection with its original look instead.
1. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Soul Survivor
It could appear somewhat unexpected to award the gold to Soul Reaver rather than the Remastered Collection, but from my perspective, the original game was essential for the remake’s existence. Furthermore, this specific title continues to resonate deeply within my heart.
While Kain was a protagonist hard to connect with emotionally, I find myself deeply sympathetic towards unfortunate Raziel. His character is systematically broken down and left for dead, barely surviving by sheer luck and divine trickery.
As a gamer, I yearned for the same insights that Raziel sought, all while meting out the righteous vengeance Kain deserved.
I still find the gameplay compelling, both the combat and the mind-bending puzzles to solve.
In essence, Soul Reaver remains a topic of discussion among fans, regardless of their feelings towards the broader Legacy of Kain franchise. I highly encourage you to uncover the reasons behind its enduring appeal on your own.
