Unseen Hunter x Hunter Anime Ending: Kurapika Dies, Killua Kills Gon!

Summary

  • Togashi planned a different ending for the original 1999 HxH anime
  • Kurapika would die after killing Phantom Troupe members
  • Killua kills Gon in the alternative proposed ending

Many viewers of “Hunter x Hunter” may have only seen the more recent anime version that debuted in 2011. However, it’s worth noting that the initial adaptation, though perhaps considered somewhat dated compared to modern standards, retains a unique appeal for some fans.

In a different version, the original conclusion was meant to be entirely distinct, potentially astonishing followers of the show had it been implemented.

The 1999 Hunter X Hunter Anime Was Going To Have A Very Different Ending

Killua Kills Gon In This Ending

It’s well-known among fans of HxH that a series adaptation preceded the highly acclaimed one from 2011. The 1999 adaptation marked the debut of HxH as an anime, and at that time, there was significantly less material available for animation.

Instead of creating a new ending for the story, as was done with the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime, the animation studio had intended to do so for HxH, but Togashi, the creator of the manga, declined this proposal.

The 1999 anime series came to an end when it ran out of material, with no plans to continue beyond a few OVA releases. Originally, it was intended to conclude in 2001, but at that time Togashi had not yet finished the York Shin Arc in the manga, which would have served as the basis for this ending.

In the 1999 anime, the conclusion that was envisioned would have come across as rather peculiar to numerous characters. This unusual twist was orchestrated by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, the show’s director. In fact, there are sketched out plans depicting how things were intended to unfold.

Initially, Kurapika’s tale reaches its end when he manages to defeat the Phantom Troupe. This act results in him losing an eye, and eventually, he meets his demise.

Deeply saddened by Kurapika’s demise, Gon would journey back to Whale Island, his humble abode, a place where he would grieve. Upon arrival, he would encounter both Kite and Ging. In contrast, Killua would make his way to Kukuroo Mountain. A seven-year interval would follow this parting.

Gon, feeling very sad about Kurapika’s death, goes back to Whale Island (his hometown) to mourn. There, he meets Kite and Ging again. Meanwhile, Killua heads to Kukuroo Mountain. Seven years later, everything moves on.

Subsequently, Killua planned to travel to Gon’s homeland, Whale Island, with the intention of confronting and potentially harming Ging. However, despite Gon’s efforts to prevent it, a tragic turn of events led to Killua unintentionally causing harm to Gon instead.

If Yoshihiro Togashi had agreed with this conclusion, this is how the 1999 Fullmetal Alchemist anime might have finished – a version that, it’s clear, would not align with his intended narrative direction.
