What Is Minky Moko About?
This section contains Minky Momo major spoilers.
The animated series called Minky Momo was brought to life by Takeshi Shudo and Ashi Productions. Originally, it was broadcasted in Japan during the years 1982-1983.
In the tale, Momo serves as the royal figurehead of Fenarinarsa, a realm suspended among the clouds where dreams reside. Unfortunately, the kingdom finds itself on shaky ground due to the decline in people’s capacity to dream and harbor hope. Consequently, this ethereal fairy tale world could vanish altogether.
Her parents choose to send her to Earth with the aim of helping humans rediscover their aspirations and dreams. Equipped with magical powers, she assumes various adult personas, such as a police officer or veterinarian, to address challenges and bring joy to those in need.
It’s important to note that Momo is primarily recognized for two aspects: its association with earthquakes and the sad ending of the series. The connection with earthquakes stems from a major tremor that occurred when the final episode initially aired in 1983, and again during its re-airing in 1994-1995, on the exact day of the devastating Kobe earthquake. While smaller quakes were experienced during the series run, the 1983 and 1995 incidents unfortunately led to significant destruction and loss of life – a fact that fans sometimes joke about, but these events are indeed serious and tragic.
The second scenario occurs as a result of the toy company funding the show abruptly ending their sponsorship because of low toy sales, even though the viewership was high. In response, the animation team revised the plot so that Momo dies after being hit by a truck carrying toys; she then reincarnates as a human and the series carries on for a few more episodes.
In the 1990s, another installment emerged, introducing a fresh Momo figure as the central character hailing from the realm of Marinarsa.
Minky Momo, initially introduced in English under the title “The Magical World of Gigi” by Harmony Gold (known for creating Robotech), was broadcasted in Australia with an English dub. In certain regions, the character goes by the name Gigi instead.
The Revival of an Old Project?
It’s possible that this project may have been put on hold for some time. Takeshi Shudo expressed interest in creating a new television series back in 2006, but AshiPro started working on a new production in 2009 without any updates since then. The unfortunate death of Shudo in 2010 might have halted the project’s progress.
Here’s an enthusiast’s take on the information:
I’ve been eagerly following the updates about this upcoming anime series, but it seems there’s more to the story! The Miracle Dream Minky Momo manga from 2005 by Yamabe Yoshina might actually be based on an initial concept for an anime project. This intriguing tidbit hints at a third character, the Princess of Leafinasa (though the official transliteration is still to come). It’s plausible that the manga was developed from drafts of this project that AshiPro were working on back in 2009. Can’t wait to see if these rumors turn out to be true!
Alternatively, consider choices like a system restart, a tribute film, or an entirely new anime sequel distinct from the initially conceived one.
Magical Princess Minky Momo is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
