Spoilers for The Walking Dead season 3 and mention of character deaths
AMC’s “The Walking Dead” vividly illustrates how ruthless the world can transform during a global zombie outbreak. Besides the relentless danger posed by the “walkers,” the struggle for survival in a world stripped bare is equally daunting. The show’s characters are not only confronted with the mindless undead, but they must also be cautious of their fellow humans, as trust becomes a valuable and scarce resource.
Throughout its 11 seasons, Rick and his group faced tough decisions on who to allow into their fold and who had to fend for themselves. In the sixth episode of season 3, Michonne, a cherished character, arrived at the prison with baby formula after Glenn and Maggie were abducted by Merle Dixon. Initially skeptical of Michonne, Rick eventually came to appreciate her as an invaluable team member. However, Michonne’s fate could have been drastically different if Rick had followed a ruthless approach, similar to one shocking scene from season 3 that left many viewers uncomfortable due to its graphic and harsh nature.

In the 12th episode of season 3 of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Clear,” Rick, Carl, and Michonne embark on a journey, realizing they lack the firepower to confront the Governor’s well-armed group. As they travel along a highway, the trio spots a survivor trying to hitch a ride. Calling out for their help, he is initially ignored, but he persists in chasing after Rick’s vehicle. Eventually, he gives up and collapses, understanding that they aren’t stopping for him. Later in the episode, on their return journey, the helpless hitchhiker can be seen dead, with only his orange backpack remaining – evidence that zombies had claimed his life.
On The Walking Dead’s Reddit forum, user The-She-Creature shared their emotional response to a specific scene, highlighting three instances that particularly affected them. This post sparked many other Walking Dead fans to voice their agreement, labeling the scene as “discouraging,” “cruel,” and “frustrating” due to Rick’s inability to help during this difficult moment. One user even admitted to skipping over this part when rewatching the series, finding it a distressing way for a character who appeared to require assistance to meet their end.
Individuals hold significant value. Who knows, that man could have become a physician, a dental professional, an auto mechanic, or an engineer. It’s disheartening to see him being overlooked. He might have been the most beneficial person they had the chance to encounter.
One user pointed out that if Rick hadn’t ultimately trusted Michonne, the group would have been in a much more precarious situation since she had saved several of its members on multiple occasions, even Rick himself. Given the circumstances, they suggested that Rick should have given him a chance, at the very least. However, following all the hardships they had recently experienced, trusting people was virtually a death sentence for Rick, and he didn’t want to risk repeating that tragedy. As a result, he took every measure possible to ensure their safety, but it came at a considerable cost.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 and Daryl Dixon Season 3 are set to air in the spring of 2025.
